2. This is what we call ‘Parish Share’
Thank you—for being generous, engaged and open
We are the 246 churches in the Diocese of Newcastle.
One of the ways we support each other in mission is to share some of the money given in each parish.
As a family of churches, we use that money to pay for clergy where they are most needed.
That includes housing them and training them, supporting them in their ministry, and providing for their future when they retire.
Some parishes are able to raise more money than others, and they are able to share their money to support clergy in less well-off parishes.
This is what we call ‘Parish Share’

Parish Share
pays to support our clergy in their work
We ask a great deal of our parish clergy - The biggest part of the costs we face as a diocese is in providing as many parish priests as we can, with their stipends, housing and pensions.
Supporting Ministers - Parish priests are supported by a specialist team of supporting ministers who, along with staff at Church House, offer skills, advice and hands-on expertise for parishes throughout the year.
Church House - The administrative centre for the diocese for help with accounts, legal advice, training, clergy housing and for the administration of Parochial Church Councils and the system of synodical government.
Church Schools - God’s mission is carried forward through Church Schools as well as churches. The Diocesan Education Board promotes outstanding Christian education in the 48 Church Schools in our Diocese.

 £22 support from the national Church of England
£9 from fees, grants and donations received,
including the Lord Crewe Trust and our Link

Spending
Here’s where each £100 will go:
£73 on deploying clergy in our parishes.
That’s £59 on stipends, pensions and national insurance, £10 on housing costs, and £4 on relocation costs, curates’ housing, support for those in training, etc
 £9 on support services including staff and facilities at Church House; IT, Legal and Human Resources and meeting other statutory responsibilities
 £7 on Supporting Ministers who provide expert advice and services to parishes and clergy, and carry out specialist work on behalf of the whole diocese
 £5 on ministry and discipleship training, the Education Board, the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, and Task Groups
 £5 on supporting the national work of the Church of England including General Synod
 £1 on Chaplains in Higher Education and the Police
 ...and if we meet our budget we’ll have 21p left to add to our reserves to help in difficult years.

8. Parish Share

In 2012 our giving grew but didn’t reach the level agreed by Synod when setting the budget.
Just over £4 million was given in Parish Share in 2012; a great effort and a sign of commitment to the mission with which God has trusted us.
But...
The shortfall is equivalent to the cost of about 11 full-time clergy for the year

A shortfall must be covered from reserves (saved money from previous years), or a saving must be made by leaving clergy posts vacant.
We have drawn on our reserves for the last few years and this is unsustainable.

But from 2009 to 2010 the number of people planning their giving in the Newcastle Diocese using Gift Aid declined from 8,000 to 7,800.
Could we make it a target significantly to improve the numbers on this slide?

10. Parish Share is part of our calling
In 2011 our Diocesan Synod adopted this description of Parish Share:
The Church of England rejoices in its calling to serve every person, in every neighbourhood, in the name of Christ.
Under the leadership of the Bishop each PCC takes responsibility for the life of their own church and shares in the work and resources of the Deanery and the Diocese as a whole.
The Parish Share is the financial contribution of every parish to the life of the Diocese.
It is both a sign of interdependence and of mutual responsibility for the sustenance and flourishing of ministry and mission.
