10/6 Day 5 Grab a red pen. Vocab Unit II set up. Use 11 index cards and label your new Table of Contents- Shaping a New Nation. Learning Target- I can associate a vocab term with a visual or key word. ( put this on top of the new divider and your NAME) Homework: Finish Flip cards by Wednesday, highlight, key word or visual for each.

4 Republic Government in which the citizens rule through elected representatives.

5 Articles of Confederation
USA First document/set of laws that outlined the new type of government after the Revolution. 2 equal levels- State and National Confederation = Alliance

6 Shays’ Rebellion 1,200 debt-ridden farmers rebelled to close the courts so they would not lose their farms to creditors. *showed ineffectiveness of the Articles of Confederation. No Executive Branch!

7 Land Ordinance of 1795 Plan for dividing up western lands. Goal- develop farms and establish communities. BD

Congress’s 3 step plan for new states to enter the country. BD

9 The Great Compromise A two-house Congress to satisfy large and small states. Senate = equal representation (2 per state) House of Reps. = determined by population

10 3/5’s Compromise 3/5’s of a state’s slaves were counted as population for representation in the House of Reps. and taxation.

11 Federalism Political system in which a national government and state governments share power.

12 Ratification Official approval of the Constitution, or of an amendment, by the states. Anti-Feds would only ratify with a inclusion of a Bill of Rights.

13 Interstate Commerce Trade BETWEEN the states, regulated by Federal Government.

14 Bill of Rights First ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, added in 1791 and consisting of a formal list of citizens’ rights and freedoms.

15 Intrastate Commerce Trade within a state, regulated by the state governments.

16 Electoral College A group of electors cast ballots for the presidential candidates. Number of Electors is based on the number of House and Senate seats together.

20 Baron de Montesquieu Separation of Powers so no one branch of government becomes too powerful. Judicial, Executive, Legislative

21 Voltaire Freedom of religion, speech & expression Separation of church and state

22 Anti-Federalist This political group would not ratify (approve) the Constitution without a Bill of Rights. Headed up by Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry.

23 Federalist This political group felt that the Constitution had checks and balances that protected the peoples rights. Headed up by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. Federalist Papers
