Maths is Fun The best learning children experience is when they are having fun! We practise and develop Maths concepts through games

What topics are taught?
5
What does working Mathematically mean?
Working Mathematically includes: Communicating Problem Solving Reasoning Working Mathematically skills are embedded into the content throughout the syllabus.
6
How can I help my child to work Mathematically?
Ask questions: What do you already know? What do you need to know? How else could you answer the question? Which strategy did you use? Which other strategy could you use? How could you check their answer?
7
What is the learning Progression?
It is important to remember that students are all different and have different strengths. There will be students who will be working towards their grade expectations and some students who will be working above the grade expectations.

Addition and Subtraction Mental Strategies
Inverse Strategy: For example: 65 – 37 = start at 37 add 3 to make 40 then add 20 to make 60 then add 5 to make 65 and so the answer is = 28

Compensation Strategy: For example = ? = = 93, subtract 1 to obtain 92

What is the learning Progression?
Equal Groups (Multiplication) The ability to form equal groups is important for the foundation understanding of multiplication and division. At this stage students are beginning to use language such as ‘groups of’, sharing, left over, total. For example: 2 groups 3 in each group 6 in total
20
What is the learning Progression?
Equal Groups (Division) For example: Sharing 10 objects between 2 people

What is the learning Progression?
Arrays An array is formed by arranging a set of objects into rows and columns. Each column must contain the same number of objects as the other columns, and each row must have the same. For example:
23
What is the learning Progression?
Area Model The Area Model can be thought of as a ‘blank array’. For example: 684 × 5 = For example: 25 × 26 =

When do students learn their times tables?
It is important to remember that times tables should only be taught once students really understand making ‘groups of’ and ‘rows of’ in order to really understand how to solve problems with multiplication later on. This is just a guide and some students may require more or less time to achieve quick recall of their times tables.
