1 The Metric System Notes-Foldable

2 Basic Units Volume: Liter Mass: Gram Length: Meter
Units can be varied by adding prefixes to the basic units. Ex) Kilometer

3 Other Metric Units Temperature: Celsius Force: Newton Weight: Newton

4 Foldable Do an uneven hot dog fold-(with a flap)
Label flap: Metric System Cut 7 tabs on folded flap Label sections with prefixes (put basic units in center) Under flaps, write down the value Cut out conversion steps-glue on back of foldable.

5 Each Prefix has a value:
Kilo (k) Hecto (h)- 100 Deca (da)-10 Basic Units: Meter (m) Liter (l) Gram (g) Deci (d) - 1/10 Centi (c)- 1/100 Milli (m)- 1/1000

6 On Back of Foldable Step 1: Determine if the converted number will be bigger or smaller than the original number.

7 On Back of Foldable Step 2: Determine the location of the decimal point in the original number. Make the decimal point large enough to see easily.

8 On Back of Foldable Step 3: Count the number of decimal places you will move using the units on front. .

9 On Back of Foldable Step 4: Determine the direction to move the decimal point (use front). Which way did you move, left or right? Move the decimal point in the same direction. .

10 On Back of Foldable Step 5: Move the decimal point, adding zeros when necessary. *Don’t forget to remove “old” decimal place. Check to see that your answer makes sense-see step 1. .
