1 Changes in Agriculture and Population
How technology transformed agriculture and the resulting population shift

2 Boll Weevil Drought Facts Effects
Insect that infested the cotton crops Would eat the cotton inside the boll Lack of rain dried out the land making it not suitable for farming B.W.= destroyed 1000’s of acres of cotton ruining Ga’s economy Great Migration of African Americans and poor whites to the North in search of work Proved Ga was too dependent on one crop and needed to diversify

3 AAA Facts Effects New Deal Program by FDR
Paid farmers not to plant certain crops Purpose was to balance supply and demand of agricultural products while helping farmers maintain a profit Decreased need for sharecroppers and other farm workers Caused African Americans to leave rural areas Allowed farmers to buy farm machinery rather than pay laborers

4 WWII (During and After)
Facts Effects During: Increased need for factories and industries resulting in a shift away from an agriculturally based economy After: GI Bill-provided $ to veterans During: Whites and Blacks moved to industrial centers of Ga for jobs After: Veterans returning from war were seeking college educations, new homes or buying land

5 Technological Advances in Agriculture
Facts Effects Advanced farm equipment/supplies: Tractors Reapers Fertilizers Decreased need for human labor meant less $ spent Improved and more efficient farm machines Safety: industry workers and farmers would lose limbs or lives

6 AAA Intended Consequences Unintended Consequences
To balance supply and demand of agricultural products Allow farmers to still make a profit Avoid over-production of agricultural products (one of the causes of the G.D.) Farmers had less need for labor/sharecroppers Led to many African Americans leaving rural areas and seek industrial jobs in Georgia or the North

7 Technology Innovation
Intended Consequences Unintended Consequences Make it easier & more efficient to grow & process crops with less man power Increase productivity Less workers were needed and were then seeking industrial jobs in Ga. or the North Safety Issues: Industry workers or farmers would lose limbs or lives
