1 Social Impact Pollution: One of the bad things about industrialization was pollution. Urbanization: movement of people from farms to cities. Labor Unions: groups of workers negotiating for better pay and working conditions. Rise of big business and millionaires!! Children were expected to work in factories.

3 Andrew Carnegie Andrew Carnegie became a millionaire in the steel business by putting all his competitors out of business. He created U.S. Steel in Pittsburg.

4 John D. Rockefeller John D. Rockefeller became the richest man in the world in the oil business. He created Standard Oil Company. Oil began being used in all types of machines, like cars.

5 Inventions!! During the industrial revolution there was a explosion of new inventions These new inventions not only transformed factories but people home life as well.

6 The electric light Can you imagine what life would be like without the electric light? Thomas Edison invented the electric light. This drastically changed peoples everyday lives, you could drive at night, have well lit rooms, and businesses stayed open later.

9 Telegraph In 1844, Samuel Morse invented the telegraph
The telegraph used dots and dashes to send messages over electric lines. These dots and dashes became known as Morse Code.

10 Telegraph With out the telegraph the invention of the telephone and messaging systems used on Facebook and twitter would not exist today.

15 Henry Ford Henry Ford invented the first affordable car, the Model T.
The car had been invented earlier, but Ford was the first to make the car affordable. He also invented the assembly line

The Wright brothers were the first men to successfully fly an airplane. The flight lasted only twelve seconds, but it proved men could fly.

18 Social Movements Cult of Domesticity: Idea that women belonged in the home not working in factories. Many woman believed this. Women’s rights movement: fought for women's right to vote (1920) and fought for respect in the work place.

19 Education Public Education improves, teachers begin to receive actual training to teacher children. Higher Education expands, colleges and universities are built.

20 Science Charles Darwin creates the theory of evolution, (Natural selection) this shocks the religious community. He argues that species either evolve (change) over time or die off. Survival of the fittest!!! Eventually applies to businesses Medical advancements increase the population
