1 Provost’s Hybrid Pilot
Isis Artze-Vega and Patty Delgado University Teaching and Learning Good morning and thank you for having me. My name is Patty Delgado and I am the assistant director for online and hybrid teaching and learning. Isis was unable to make it this morning due to some conflicting meetings and sends her apologies. We requested a few minutes of your time this morning because we are at an important juncture and need your assistance, want to answer your questions, and offer our support. If you have no idea what I am referring to, the Provost’s Hybrid Pilot is a program that has been put in place to assist with the Beyond Possible 2020 Strategic plan in which the university has a goal of 30/30/40, where 30% of all credit hours offered will be in a hybrid format, 30% will be offered face to face, and 40% will be offered fully online.

2 Provost’s Hybrid Pilot Process
How does the pilot work and what are the requirements? A call for applicants goes out to all faculty and adjuncts…this was sent out last month, and submissions for Summer and Fall are due by December 16th….once the application deadline has passed, applicants will be distributed to chairs accordingly for approvals – you can expect these s to come in the first week of January – faculty who have been approved by the chair and are accepted into the program will have 3 days to confirm their participation. From this point you will receive a final list of faculty who will be participating so that the unit schedulers can make any necessary adjustments to the schedules. Faculty who are accepted are required to participate in all professional development workshops, after they have completed the professional development workshops, they will then be assigned an FIU Online instructional designer to assist with the online development of the course. The course will run the following semester…once the course runs, and faculty have completed a self-assessment using FIU’s Learner-Centered Hybrid Rubric, they will receive a $1500 stipend.

3 Who should be part of the Provost’s Hybrid Pilot?
Strategic focus on courses rather than the individual faculty should be considered when approving applicants. Strategic Plan goals are measured in Credit Hours, not course. Courses with high enrollments should be considered. Large enrollment courses that contain multiple sections should be considered for a master course/template design. What does this all mean for you? Many of you may have seen these s in the past, and we greatly appreciate that you’ve taken the time to approve them. As we continue with this process, we have found several kinks in the armor and realized that the process was not as seamless as we had hoped. We have taken several steps to alleviate some of the issues and poor timing, that being said it is likely that most of your faculty who will be applying for summer and fall will already have their schedules completed and should you decide to approve them for the pilot, they will need to have their schedules adjusted accordingly with the hybrid section. As you review the participants for selection, we encourage you to consider: The parameters of the BeyondPossible2020 Strategic plan hybrid goals. Specifically, keep in mind that the hybrid goal of 30% is in undergraduate credit hours, not in classes offered.  The frequency of the course. Strategic selection of courses that are higher in credit hours and recur every semester are ideal.  Core courses. Core courses offered in multiple sections are good candidates for master course development, such that you would want several of the faculty teaching the course to participate in the pilot together, and we may be able to include others who did not apply in this pilot. The professional development requirements. Your faculty will be investing a significant amount of time in course development, so this is a great opportunity for them to refine their teaching skills—in any modality. Schedule Adjustments will need to be made accordingly for the semester they applied for

4 Requirements of Provost’s Hybrid Pilot
Courses/Faculty approved to go through the Provost’s Hybrid Pilot must be scheduled as mode H, with a 50/50 weekly in-class and out-of-class designation, and section listed as “UHA” or “BHA.” Faculty who have been approved by their Chair to participate in the Pilot must be scheduled to teach the hybrid course in the semester they applied for. Courses approved for the Pilot are part of faculty’s regular load. Schedules for approved faculty will need to be adjusted accordingly. Once you approve faculty to participate…Some faculty have asked about whether there are funds to cover overloads and unfortunately there are not…they only funds available are for the stipend.

5 Moving Forward… Please help us by:
Keeping an eye out for courses who may be good candidates Keeping in mind that future semesters will have even more certified hybrid faculty to teach Please keep 2 things in mind…

6 Questions? Feedback? We have provided you with a list of frequently asked questions that you can keep with you.
