DEGRADATION OF WATER QUALITY IN THE TAYLORSVILLE-BENNION MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT Katie Watkins GIS in Water Resources November 30, 2004

2 4 12 miles

3 Taylorsville-Bennion Municipal Water District

4

5 Project Goals To compile well data for the TBID wells
To examine the degradation of water in these wells Where is the poor quality water coming from? Determine the window of time in which these wells can still be used Look for correlations between Water quality and depth of the well Water quality and pumping

6 Total Dissolved Solids
A measure of water quality The sum of the concentrations of major ions including sulfate, phosphate, chloride, etc. The MCL for TDS is 2,000 mg/L

7

8 GIS Representation of Groundwater Degradation

9 1988 LEGEND High = 1500 mg/L Low = 100 mg/L

10 1995 LEGEND High = 1500 mg/L Low = 100 mg/L

11 2003 LEGEND High = 1500 mg/L Low = 100 mg/L

12 Possible Solutions Water treatment
Purchase water from other outside sources such as Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Develop piping and blending systems that will mix increasing ratios of high quality water with the well water over time

13 The data used in this project was obtained
from the following sources: USGS State of Utah Engineer’s Office Taylorsville-Bennion Improvement District Caldwell Richards Sorensen Engineers
