Current update “Eco-industry, its size, employment, perspectives and barriers to growth in an enlarged EU” Started 2005, expected to finish July (Ernst and Young, RDC) Objectives: To update data on export, employment, market size, etc To give more insight into sectors European Commission Environment Directorate General

EU25, in break by media (water/waste/air/other) or/and by type of technology (end of pipe/integrated/ end of pipe e.g. recycling) number of companies and their structure (number of small, medium and big enterprises) value and structure of the market export, import, trade balance employment geographical concentration Data should cover the period European Commission Environment Directorate General

Outstanding issues How can we clearly explain the relationship between EPE and the size of the eco-industry? How can we check data quality provided by third countries? 9 Future work – sectoral analysis
A study on the sectoral burden of environmental policy Planned to begin end of 2006 Look at limited number of sectors (to be decided) and go into more depth, include comparisons across firms etc To improve data reliability want to piggy-back on MS collection of EPE statistics Data confidentiality an issue Need support of MSs eg to put our contractor in touch with firms European Commission Environment Directorate General
