3 What to consider before you start

4 What to consider before you start
Post-secondary education requirements: Do you have the correct courses for post-secondary plans? Course interest and aptitude Are you considering your strengths? Co-op, SHSM programs, Special Courses

5 Thinking of Co-op? Grade 11 is a great year to try it
Co-op may be used to fulfill G1, G2 and G3 credit requirements (maximum of 2) Co-op does not count toward the 6 grade 12U/M credits needed for university admission Co-op is a 2 credit program offered in the morning or afternoon (the other half day is spent is class at Westmount) – COO3O8 is the course code Attend a Co-op information session: February 8 periods 3 (learning commons) February 15 period 2 (flex day) (room 202/2039) February 21 period 3 (room 94)

6 Specialist High Skills Major Programs
Full day, full semester programs offered at other schools Students take a cluster of courses in a specific area, a related co-op and additional in-school training related to the SHSM See Board website or go speak to your guidance counsellor for details

7 Specialist High Skills Major Programs

11 Thinking of a ‘Spare’ ? If you are thinking about taking a spare (eligible once 20 credits are earned), many students take only 6 credits in grade 12 so that they may take one spare each semester (recommended) Don’t take a spare in grade 11 if you wish to take two spares in grade 12 (unless you’ve earned extra credits already and you can afford to do this) Choose STUDY1 for semester 1 spare and STUDY2 for semester 2 spare Choose STUDYH if you are taking only one spare in grade 12

12 E-Learning Can self-select on Career Cruising – but you will not be registered until you meet with your counsellor to register (around April) NOT a Westmount course (has deadlines) Sometimes these courses are taught from teachers in other school boards Course completed online except for final exam that usually is written at Westmount Not a 5th class but is assigned to your timetable as one of your 4 classes

13 Required Courses in Grade 11
Only Math and English are required If you took ENG2D1, you may take ENG3U1 or ENG3C1 If you took ENG2P1, you may take ENG3C1 Carefully check math pathways – there are four grade 11 math courses If you took MFM2P1, then you cannot take MCR3U1 – you can choose either MCF3M1, MBF3C1 or MEL3E1 MCF3M1 is pre-requisite for MCT4C1 and MDM4U1

14 University-Bound Considerations
Admission requirements found at All programs in Ontario require the completion of 6 grade 12 U/M courses All programs require ENG4U1 If you earn more than 6 grade 12 U/M courses, the universities will look at your best 6 including the prerequisite courses Universities do not receive mid-semester marks for the first semester (but they do see mid-semester marks in the second semester)

15 College-Bound Considerations
Admission requirements found at Required courses are program-specific (most programs require high school graduates to have 1 to 3 specific courses) Most (not all) consider 4U and 4C courses equally – so choose courses wisely Carefully check math pathways – After MEL3E1, only MEL4E1 MBF3C1 to MAP4C1 MCF3M1 to MCT4C or MDM4U1 MCR3U1 to any grade 12 math
