Presentation on theme: "Need for the ATA SKA Development Facility"— Presentation transcript:

1 Need for the ATA SKA Development Facility
Some investigations can only be done on the ATA Others would be most time- and cost-effective if done there. Complete observatory infrastructure at Hat Creek: antennas (interferometry) signal path, correlator, internet connectivity accommodation technical and administrative support

2 Tasks unique to the ATA Practical performance of interference mitigation techniques (large-N, shroud) Large-N calibration and imaging studies, including polarimetric calibration Stations size and performance: validation of simulations

3 Tasks best done using the ATA (time constraints)
ATA antenna and feed performance, and extension to higher and lower frequencies Evaluation of alternative feeds Construction and evaluation of other antenna prototypes (e.g. 12 meter) Mutual coupling/shadowing studies

4 Other tasks that could be done at the ATA
Data transport and management (much remotely) existing BIMA real-time data path to users true remote observing (no operator)

5 ASDF: Berkeley roles Organize and provide support for use of the ATA and Hat Creek Radio Observatory within the TDP Conduct specific investigations as part of the TDP Practicalities: Travel, equipment, computer budgets at Berkeley Support for accommodation expenses of visitors to Hat Creek Substantial management at Berkeley

6 ASDF staffing 1 Manager (50% on project?)
1 FTE Engineer (50% mech / 50% RF/El.) (Berkeley) 1 or 2 technicians (Hat Creek) 2 Postdocs (Berkeley) 1 Admin. staff (Berkeley) Engineer, technicians, admin would support all users of the facility. Postdocs would primarily carry out specific pieces of the TDP plan

7 Berkeley-led projects
Bock, Welch, two postdocs, students? ATA antenna and feed performance Mutual coupling/shadowing studies Large-N calibration and imaging studies, including polarimetric calibration Practical performance of Interference Mitigation algorithms Stations size and performance: validation of simulations

8 Comments on NAIC proposal
Two key TDP centers: ATA SKA Development Facility Hardware Development Group Antennas, feeds, optics + mount, receivers closely linked Would benefit from a coordinated effort and central management (Weinreb and Welch?) Report directly to Project Director? Do these alleviate the need for an NAIC project manager
