5 Vocab: Frame Story Frame Story- the story within which another story is told What is the frame story of this play? How would this play be different if the frame story was not a part of it? Think about what we learn ONLY in the frame story.

6 Questions: Act I Scene 1 Why does Mr. Frank return to the place where his family hid? What does he receive from Miep when he returns? What does the author use to transition from the present to the past?

7 Questions: Act I Scene 2 Who arrives first at the hiding place?
Why does Mr. Frank invite the Van Daans to go into hiding with them? Who helps the people in hiding? Why do you think they do this? Look on page Why do you think the stage directions indicate silence after Mr. Frank’s monologue? Why doesn’t Anne throw away her Star of David? Why does Peter throw his away?

8 Questions: Act I Scene 2 What special gift does Anne receive from her father their first day in hiding? How does the mood of Scene 2 change as Anne tries to go downstairs for a pen?

9 Questions: Act I Scene 3 What was life like for the families during the day? What is Anne and Peter’s relationship like in the beginning of their hiding experience? In Scene 3, Mrs. Frank expresses her fear of illness while they are in hiding. Why should she be afraid of illness? Describe the relationships between the Van Daans. Peter and his mother/Peter and his father/Mrs. and Mr. Van Daan Why does Dussel join the group? Who wants him to join? Who does not? Why?
