This is a great resource for understanding what each tag is used for in a MARC record.

5. MARC MARC stands for MA chine-Readable Cataloging record.
"Machine-readable" means that one particular type of machine, a computer, can read and interpret the data in the cataloging record. The following pages will explain why this is important and how it is made possible.

The patron can use this to look up books that are in the media center, (this is why it is so important to have MARC records that are accurate.
