9 Challenges in SA Education:
South African teachers do not have the basic pedagogic and content knowledge competencies needed to impart the skills needed by the learners.

10 Children are coming out of school WITHOUT the the 3 basic R’s of education that is the ability to Read, wRite and aRithmetics.

11 “A farmer went out one day to search for a lost calf
“A farmer went out one day to search for a lost calf. The herders had returned without it the evening before. And that night there had been a terrible storm” 87% of South African Grade _______ learners cannot read and understand this paragraph.

12 South Africa’s education system was ranked 133rd out of 142 countries in the world by the World Economic Forum. In a league table of education systems drawn up in 2015 by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) club of mainly rich countries, South Africa ranks 75th out of 76.

13 Lack of basic amenities, infrastructure and learning resources in South African townships and rural schools.

14 The South African Human Rights Commission has found that 40% of children interviewed said they had been the victims of crime at school. Sexual assaults on South African children were found to have taken place in schools.

15 CONCLUSION: Without proper support in primary education, especially a strong grounding in numeracy and literacy, secondary and tertiary education will rest on weak foundations and will never yield the success that primary school support could ensure.
