4 Reading Questions: part 1 Chapter 1
Who does Irene receive a letter from? Who is Claire Kendry? Be sure to tell me what the text says in your response How does Irene describe Claire’s personality? What happens to Clare’s dad? Do you know anyone who could be described in a way similar to Claire? Why does Irene not want to see Clare? What do think Clare means by the “Pale Life?” What are the implications of this term? What inferences can we make about Clare’s ‘pale life’? Make your best predictions of what might have happened in Chicago.

How does Irene react to the man fainting? What does this say about her character? 4. Using context clues: Look at the word Nebulous on page 12. What is the meaning of this word? 5. Why is Irene in the city? 6. How does Irene see while in the café? 7. What does this chapter reveal about Irene? What textual evidence is there? 8. We will pull one location or situation from the jar. In your NOTES, you will write a one paragraph setting description. Think of the mood that your location entails, and use as many descriptive words as possible. You will have 8 minutes to do this. GO!
