The Threat of Mary Queen of Scots
She was viewed my many as more legitimate than Elizabeth, especially Catholics who rejected Henry’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon She refused to accept the Treaty of Edinburgh which left Scotland controlled by Protestant’s and ended Mary’s claim of the English throne She was the Queen of Scotland, which bordered England AND was close to the North, which had was Catholic and rebelled in 1569.

1559, Married to French King (Francis II) died prematurely. 1561, returned to Scotland, marrying Lord Darnley. Darnley, womanizer & alcoholic, stabbed royal musician David Riccio in a fit of jealously. Francis II Lord Darnley

Plot and Rebellion in 1569 In the same year as the Northern Rebellion, Mary plotted to marry the Duke of Norfolk in 1569, have children and overthrow Elizabeth Had support from some leading Nobles, including Elizabeth's favourite, such as the Earl of Leicester However, the Earl of Leicester eventually told Elizabeth about the plot and Mary was moved to Coventry, but still not executed or exiled.
