What words would you use to describe it? How does it make you feel?

3 Goals Describe the influence of the church during the Middle Ages by completing a worksheet.

4 Essential Questions What types of learning and art developed during the Middle Ages? What was the role of religion in government? How did the Catholic Church affect the lives of medieval Europeans?

5 Recap Remember, in the late Middle Ages, the Crusades, the rise of strong monarchies, and the commercial revolution created a more secure Europe. Because of this, much of the money brought in went to building and learning.

6 Architecture What: Europe was very religious (remember rise of Christianity?) so most buildings were churches How: Built cathedrals in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Why important: growth of culture within Europe.

7 Let’s take a short tour of these churches

8 Development of Universities
What: first colleges were created during the Middle Ages to educate students in law, medicine, and theology. Where: Bologna, Italy, Paris, France, and Cambridge, England. Why important: Many of the ideas that students pursued help make way for modern science.

9 Scholasticism What: a new way of thinking about the world, which combine religion and science. Who: Anselm, who reasoned about the existence of God Why important: Many disagreed with the ancient philosophers

10 Thomas Aquinas Who: Ancient scholastic who tried to use religion and reason to find an agreement with the philosophers What: Major work was the Summa Theologica, which summarized the ideas of theology Why important: Reason and religion are hard to combine for proof and the concept of natural law

11 Language and literature
What: Mostly Latin was spoken by educated people, poorer people had their own language, the vernacular More what: Authors began to write in this vernacular with troubadour poetry and heroic epics. Why important: Language and reading could now reach more people= more educated

12 Religion’s affect on Society
What: new religious orders after the church looked like is was too powerful Who: Cistercian order, Franciscans, and Dominicans Why important: set up differences between church and followers

13 Religion and everyday life
What: many Europeans gathered for mass, the Catholic worship service. More what: took part in the sacraments (communion) Why important: religion was very much involved in people’s lives.

14 Heresy and Anti-Semitism
What: Inquisition and war to deal with those that went against the church What happened: Anti- Semitism and punishments Why important: There will come a time when these groups will not want to the church in charge anymore.

2. Why did the writings and ideas of ancient philosophers disturb some Christians? 3. Why did new orders of the church form?
