Around 400 A.D. praying to Mary began to take hold in the Roman Catholic Church along with the “perpetual virgin” doctrine. Roman Catholic leaders elevated Mary to the status of one to be worshiped by 590. In 1854 the doctrine of the “Immaculate Conception of Mary” was adopted. In 1950 the doctrine of the “Assumption of Mary” (that she was taken into heaven) was officially adopted.
