Proteins and Enzymes Proteins There are 4 different structures:
-Primary: consists of a simple chain of amino acids strung together

Proteins and Enzymes What might happen if a protein unfolded? -Secondary: involves the folding of chains into more complex structures

Proteins and Enzymes -Tertiary: folded chains are further folded to form large globular units

Proteins and Enzymes -Quaternary: globular units come together to form a large protein

Proteins and Enzymes Are enzymes made of amino acids? -proteins can be used for structure and for chemical reactions -proteins are folded in very specific ways and must remain that way or they do not work Enzymes -they are a type of protein made by living organisms -they do not get “used up” Are enzymes consumed in a reaction?

Proteins and Enzymes -Enzymes can work by binding things together or breaking things down -The thing that is being broken or bound is known as the substrate (reactant) -The place in the enzyme where things are broken are bound is known as the active site -Enzymes will only work on or bind to specific substrates (or reactants) active site substrate product of reaction

Make an Enzyme There are many enzymes that are used all around. One common enzyme is amylase found in your saliva. Amylase breaks down sugars into smaller parts. Other enzymes can break down materials such as proteins so that your body can use the amino acids in other ways. There are even enzymes that can be used to clean clothing and make food! Directions (at least 5 sentences) Develop a theoretical enzyme that could be used to help the world in some way. Remember – enzymes can do lots of things with like break things down, build things up, or make things happen faster. Address the following questions for this: 1. What does your enzyme do? 2. What does it help the world to do? 3. Why do you think your enzyme is especially important? 4. Draw an advertisement for this enzyme so people will use it. 5. Write down some questions you have about enzymes that would help you to make it.
