1 IEEE SFBAC Officer’s Training Professional Engineering Issues - Member Value Discussion
Ron Kane, OEB 11/9/2018

2 Question for discussion – What does IEEE Membership bring?
Background Manufacturing in the US continues to decline over 40 years Unions for remaining “producing” works is on decline too… Adversarial relationship to management and shareholders Medical and Dental practices are organized  AMA & ADA… Professional associations generally focus on job, learning, growth Engineers are generally not “organized” IEEE provides some emphasis but not the same as AMA… 11/9/2018

3 Continued Corporate Trends
Globalized R&D Globalized manufacturing – lowest cost, acceptable quality Maximize profit for shareholder If the world is becoming ‘flat’ then what we do here can likely be produced at lower cost elsewhere What might the IEEE do to foster innovation and growth of engineer? 11/9/2018

4 What do we need as engineers to be successful?
Engineering Needs Continued education Networking Mobility Greater value of IEEE member than non-IEEE member? I once suggested that Digital Library cost to a corporation / university vary inversely with what was happening to it’s IEEE member staff… A medical professional is like a professional engineer – sort of. Should the PE license be the requirement? 11/9/2018

5 Thoughts - Creativity and Innovation are still a US strength
Venture Capital resources seem to be evolving Google Ventures Example – NEST – Smart Thermostat!  $3.2 B Crowdfunding! Raspberry Pi Red Pitaya – Kickstarter 11/9/2018

6 Crowdfunding opportunities?
Raspberry Pi Foundation edit The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK registered charity (Registration Number ) which builds and develops the Raspberry Pi. Recent Milestones edit Raspberry Pi Foundation received $1M in Product Crowdfunding funding. (12/9/13) Posted 12/9/13 at 6:17am via geeky-gadgets.com Read more: 11/9/2018

7 Red Pitaya – Kickstarter
Red Pitaya Becomes a Kickstarter Success Story Adam Carlson, Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Eagle Technologies 12/20/ :35 PM EST  28 comments   post a comment A few months ago I became acquainted with the Kickstarter project for something called the Red Pitaya. This is a physically small device, yet it carries a wealth of test and measurement features, combining an oscilloscope, an arbitrary waveform generator, a PID controller, and other digital I/O functions, all at an affordable price point. At that time, the Red Pitaya had not yet reached its funding goal. A few days later it reached its goal, and then it exceeded its goal, eventually going on to raise over a quarter of a million US dollars with more than 800 backers. How could a humble laboratory instrument be such a draw and become yet another Kickstarter success story? 11/9/2018

8 Chapter / Section Emphasis?
Would crowdfunding be a seminar opportunity? Is it necessary/possible to separate a 40-hr employer from innovation of this nature? Thoughts? Opportunities? Discussion? 11/9/2018
