Public Forum Debate Rebuttals . Rebuttals in Public Forum Debate

2 -----------------------------
Public Forum Debate Rebuttals Critical Speech First chance you have to make your answers. Those answers will stick in the judge’s mind. Your chance to make new arguments, though they should be made in refutation to old arguments Difficult because you are creating new content on the fly (Constructive speeches pre- prepared; Summary & Final Focus build off of prior speeches)

3 Public Forum Debate Rebuttals
Lecture Overview General Strategies for Constructive Speeches Additional Ideas for Second Rebuttal Demonstration of ways to do the Rebuttal

4 Rebuttal Approach -- General
Public Forum Debate Rebuttals Rebuttal Approach -- General Answering a Contention – Korea Threat Approach Multiple arguments Mixed of evidenced – quoted, paraphrased, logical arguments Clear tag line – what do you want the judge to hear and remember? “Deterrence prevents North Koran attack,” “History proves NK won’t attack” Offensive and defensive arguments – (a) MD undermines diplomacy, (b) MD doesn’t work Start with a very good argument, end with a very good argument, especially an offensive argument “Logical arguments” – attack evidence (qualifications, how strong it is stated, if it says that), use common knowledge, logical fallacies Defensive arguments that support other offensive arguments Introduce weighing – magnitude, probability, time-frame

5 Public Forum Debate Rebuttals
A Few Top Level Notes Should Use Prep Time – First impression answering, makes sure you have strong arguments, makes other speeches easier Ok to give a road map Prepare in Advance (a) What arguments are in your cases? (b) What arguments have you brainstormed? © What arguments have you heard about? (d) What arguments in briefing books? (d) What arguments have you scouted? Flow – Write down what they said!
