11 Elizabeth and religious change
L.O. to develop an understanding of the growth of a religious schism in England under Eliza. Schism = a divide or a split caused by differences of opinion. Recusants = someone who does not submit to authority, a heretic. E.g. Elizabeth referred to Catholics as ‘recusants’ during her reign. Oath of supremacy = an oath to be sworn by all office holders, priests, lawyers and MPs. A second refusal to swear the oath resulted in the death penalty. However no-one was ever asked to swear after an initial refusal. Puritans = very strict Protestants. People who wanted to make Protestantism pure. This meant purging the Church of England of Catholic tendencies. Puritans focused on bible study. Prerogative = Parliament were attempting to expand their remit = this means getting more power. Puritan Choir = Neale described the Puritans in Parliament as a ‘choir’ because they all had the same ideas.

12 ‘Parliament became a constant source of opposition to Elizabeth’s reign.’
Was not a constant source of opposition

13 Problem’s of royal finances
Solution Resolution? Inflation over the entire Tudor period Cloth trade collapsed in the 1550s under Mary Church lands in the 1530s were sold to pay for forgein wars. Spent too much on royal wardrobes Introduction under Mary, conithnued under Eliza, of a new book of rates which increased the amount of taxes taken. 7 Elizabeth rents rather than sells off Church land. She does sell some land to raise £800,000. Sold monolpoly rights to merchants to generate income for the crown. Under payment of officals. Delays appointment of Bishops who are garuenteed an income. Eliza avoided war and sought diplomatic solutions to international problems. Left the crown in debt. Eliza did maintain finances sufficient to defend England from Spanish attack in 1588. 1558 – 1603 the royal revenue increased by 50%.

14 Ways that Eliza punished Catholics:

15 Domestic: International: Catholic backlash!!! List the reasons for Eliza’s backlash against the Catholics in England. ‘It was the international threat of a Catholic invasion that forced Eliza’s hand to crush Catholicism at home.’ TWE would you agree with this statement?

16 Tolerance…. Time….

17 Reaction Describe Reason

18 Who were the Puritans and what did they do?
