History of IITs The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance. There are twenty three (23) IITs as on date (i.e., 2017) and they are located at different cities in INDIA. Total number of students (UG, PG, PhD, PDF) is (approximately). Salary as per GoI norms which includes (i) basic, (ii) academic grade pay (AGP), (iii) band pay, (iv) transport allowance, (v) dearness allowance (DA) Additional top up salary of Rs /- (per month) for the first three (03) years of service. After the three (years) the faculty member is eligible for difference young faculty fellowship awards each with top up salary of about Rs.10000/- (per month) for about three (03) years. Initiation grant (Rs. 3 Lakhs ~ Rs. 25 Lakhs) for research/lab set up etc. Professional Development Account (PDA).
