A belief held by many in the United States, that through hard work, courage, and freedom to live as one chooses, regardless of a person’s place in American society, a person can gain a better life. Came from European settlers (Puritans) 1620, who believed America was a “Shinning City on the Hill” and passed down, generation to generation.
