represent relations Interpret graphs of relations
Section 1.6 Relations represent relations Interpret graphs of relations SWBAT:
3
Relations y-axis (vertical axis) x-axis (horizontal axis) Origin
(0, 0) center x-axis (horizontal axis)
4
Definitions Ordered pair: A point (coordinate)
(x coordinate, y coordinate) (x, y) Relation: A set of ordered pairs Domain: Input value (x-coordinate) Range: Output value (y-coordinate)
5
Function cont… A function is like a machine.
You input a value and a value is “spit” out. 3 9 1 4 1 y = 2x + 1 Domain: Input (x value) Range: Output (y value)
6
Different Representations of a Relation
Table Graph Mapping
7
Examples 1. Express {(2, 5), (-2, 3), (5, -2), (-1, -2)} as a table, graph, and a mapping. 2. What is the domain & range?
8
Examples 1. Express {(4, -3), (3, 2), (-4, 1), (0, -3)} as a table, graph, and a mapping. 2. What is the domain & range?
9
Examples: pg 40 Example 3 The graph represents the distance Francesca has ridden on her bike. Describe what happens in the graph? As time increases the distance increases for a period of time, then become constant (so she took a break), then increased her speed (she started to peddle again)
