1 Welcome to 8th Grade US History II

2 Schedule English and Social Studies presentations: 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, 6:30 Math and Science presentations: 5:15, 5:45, 6:15, 6:45 Each presentation will last approximately 10 minutes

3 What do we study in 8th grade US History II?
This year we will be studying United States History starting with the American Revolution and how it led to the formation of the U.S. Government, the Constitution, and WWII to the present.

4 Curriculum By Quarter (estimated)
Students will work throughout the year to demonstrate their knowledge and skill through individual and collaborative work, project-based learning, simulations, writing assignments, and assessments. The focus this year is to integrate the common core standards into the curriculum, so an emphasis will be placed on practicing and assessing critical thinking skills. 1st Quarter The Road to Revolution The American Revolution 2nd Quarter The Constitution Bill of Rights Arizona’s involvement in WWII 3rd Quarter World War II The Cold War 4th Quarter The Civil Rights movement The Vietnam War The 1980's –Present (If time permits) Personal Finance (If time permits)

Civics in America Consumer Economics and Personal Finance Atlas of United States History Nextext: Japanese-American Internment, The Vietnam War, Forging a New Nation, World War II, and Civil Rights. Students are not given their own textbook

6 GATE (Advanced) US History II
Each teacher will have a GATE (advanced) US History II class during the school day. What does that look like? Student driven Simulations Emphasis on connecting history to today

7 Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum
Updated curriculum guides for all GATE courses address challenge, complexity, choice and control provide extension and enrichment consistency across schools collaboration between teachers Syllabus for each course showing expectations and learning outcomes Learning compacts are in place for participation in GATE courses to ensure courses are rigorous

8 Grading Assessments: 80% (tests, quizzes, projects, and writing assignments)       Practice: 20% (classwork )                Studying: Review vocabulary and returned assignments/notes Make flashcards, use the interactive reviews on Classzone, create a timeline to understand cause and effect, etc. You are not limited to just these strategies. Do what works for you and try other things as well. Parents feel free to review assignments with your student. Test retakes: Students will only be allowed a retake if they fail an assessment. They will complete any missing assignments they may have, and turn in a completed study guide. After all assessments are in, students will need to retake the test and can score up to a 70%. Late Work: Students will receive partial credit until the next unit test

10 Supplies for US History II
Notebook– with plenty of lined paper (Students are expected to take their US History II notebook home nightly to study for the upcoming assessment or to complete an in class assignment. There is always an exam ahead, so study if you have the time). Folder (Returned assignments should be kept and saved for future assessments) Pencils (daily) Note cards / flash cards Highlighters (pink, yellow, green, and blue) Colored pencils Class donations- Copy paper/lined paper, tissues, Lysol wipes, dry-erase markers

Assigned by teachers for missing assignments Every Wednesday afterschool from 2:00-3:30 Parents will be notified ahead of time & will need to pick up child promptly at 3:30
