4 Reconstruction in the South
1870- All former Confederate states readmitted to the Union All under Republican control with new state Constitutions First public schools in the South (segregated) Asylums Equality of civil and political rights Ended imprisonment for debt, property qualifications for office, whipping as punishment

5 Politics in the South State legislatures still mostly white (SC exception) 2,000 African Americans held office during reconstruction Hiram Revels- first black Senator in US History Civil Rights Economic failures however, many former slaves remained poor

Democrats, planters, and merchants Southern whites opposed reconstruction governments b/c economy did not improve Lots of corruption
