1 Desmos: So Much More Than Just Graphing
Jeff Parent & Imad Dakka

2 Topics to cover - partial list!
You can shut off: Minor Grid lines, Major Grid lines, Axis Can Graph in Polar Numbers on the axis Arrows on the axis Make sliders for “constant” values Projector Mode Trig Scale Tables Piecewise functions Graphing inequalities Regressions Insert Pictures Insert Notes Make multiple accounts, search for topics/sections. Functions that are defined in terms of functions. Summation notation Enable Marble slides and Card sort Google things you want to know, for instance “normal curve, desmos” or “Riemann Sum Demos” mzcu (Riemann Sum)

3 “Projector Mode” Without With

4 Step size and grid lines
Without steps or grid lines With grid lines

5 Step size and grid lines
With steps large steps/ grid lines With steps or grid lines

6 Arrows/trig steps - Type “Pi” to get the symbol:
No arrows and integer steps Arrows and trig steps

7 Notes, labels, points.

8 Inserting: notes and pictures

9 Piecewise functions, inserting pictures, and notes

10 Piecewise functions - speed of sound
y={condition/range of x’s : equation , condition/range of x’s : equation} y={0<x<11.5:-4x+11.5, 11.5<x<22:295,22<x<32, 32<x<50: 3x/ , blah, blah, blah….}

11 Piecewise functions - done simpler
Guilty Pleasures: not having to solve for y and graphing vertical line easily

12 Graphing linear inequalities

13 Inserting: Tables (max of 50 points)

14 Not your dad’s rootbeer regression

15 Not your dad’s rootbeer regression

16 Parameters Adjust manually or set to play Select “All”

17 Insert a .jpg

18 Adjust the parameters to fit.

19 Area in Polar Coordinates

20 Area in Polar Coordinates

21 Slope as an Approximation to the derivative

22 Slope as an Approximation to the derivative

23 Using a summation as a function

24 Using a summation as a function

25 Integrals and area, using the standard normal curve

26 Riemann Sums using desmos

27 Creating your 1st activity: teacher.desmos.com
Create an account on Desmos -they don’t spam! Go to teacher.demos.com/labs and (while signed in) turn on “Marble slides” and “Card sorts”. While signed in, click “custom” Choose “Polygraph” or “New Activity”

28 Turn on Marble Slides and Card Sort !!!!!!
You must turn on Marble Slides and Card Sort to be able to use these features. Go to: teacher.desmos.com/labs and check the boxes there.

29 Creating a Custom Activity: Polygraph

30 Create the Polygraphs

31 Polygraphs: Create a link or give students the code
Students will get a primer to help them understand the game. They can skip this primer once they know how to play.

32 Polygraphs - for pairs of students, Jeff and Imad

33 Polygraphs - Jeff’s view as the “Picker”

34 Polygraphs - Imad’s View as the guesser

35 Imad can eliminate graphs based on Jeff’s response

36 Polygraphs -eliminate all graphs but one!

37 Polygraphs - It took 4 questions, can you beat that?

38 A quick follow-up question before changing sides

39 Teacher View of the game

40 Creating a Custom Activity: Marbleslide (and more)

41 Creating a Custom Activity: Your Choices

42 Custom activities: What is a marbleslide?

43 What is a card sort?

44 What is a card sort?

45 Creating a Custom Activity: Graphs

46 Creating a Custom Activity: Sketch
You can use slides in combinations. Here, you can get student answers from “input” or “choices”.

47 Creating a Custom Activity: Multiple Choice

48 Multiple choice

49 Creating a Custom Activity: Multiple Choice
Multiple choice - have students give a reason for their answer!

50 Send your student to your activity!
Desmos Activity for League Conf. 2018

51 Teacher View

52 The student experience

53 Tips! When in doubt, google it! “Standard Normal Curve Desmos”.
tor/t9uetudxju Have an account for each course, save and title your work for instant recall later and/or sharing. Have fun! Try things. Go to and look around! Tips!

54 bit.ly Links! bit.ly/nonlinearreg - nonlinear regresion
bit.ly/normalarea - integration/area under normal curve bit.ly/riemannsum - Riemann Sum bit.ly/adjustparameters - Adjusting parameters bit.ly/conv_ps - Convergence of power series bit.ly/areapolar - Area in Polar bit.ly/secantline - Secant line limits to tangent line

55 Thank you!
