1 Workplace Based Assessment

2 Year 3 assessment In Year 3, the student will undertake two forms of assessment which take place in the workplace. This is in additional to other assessments such as written examinations and OSCEs. The two WBAs are Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), and mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX). Both these formats are utilised in the UK Foundation Programme.

3 Assessors Assessments must be carried out by someone with appropriate expertise in the area being assessed, and who has been appropriately selected, supported and appraised. They are responsible for honestly and effectively assessing the medical student’s performance and being able to justify their decision.(GMC 2015) Suitable staff are likely to be one of the following: Skills Tutors Doctors above the grade of FY1 Senior nurses (Band 5 or above) Appropriate allied health professionals

4 Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
DOPS is what is known as a supervised learning event (SLE) tool. The primary purpose of DOPS on the MBBS course is to provide a structured checklist for giving feedback on the student’s interaction with the patient when performing a practical procedure.

7 Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX)
A mini-CEX, like DOPs, is a supervised learning event (SLE). It involves observation and feedback on a direct clinical encounter between a medical student and a patient. The main focus of a mini-CEX will be on one of the following four areas, although some patient encounters may cover more than one: History Diagnosis Management Explanation

8 The evaluation of a Mini-CEX covers six domains which are:
1. History taking 2. Physical examination 3. Communication skills 4. Clinical judgement 5. Professionalism 6. Organisation and efficiency Not every mini-CEX will cover all areas. Students should try to ensure that across the academic year, the mini-CEX they undertake do cover the full range of competencies.
