2 PURPOSE Kiwanis International Foundation extends your Kiwanis reach in caring for the children of the world. Kiwanis International Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization and is the fundraising arm of the Kiwanis Family. The foundation’s mission is to financially assist Kiwanis International in serving the children of the world.

3 THE START Kiwanian and department store
Organized in 1939 Kiwanian and department store founder Walter Zeller makes first gift: 25 silver dollars. Auctioned for US$625 to launch your international foundation.

4 THANK YOU We’d like to introduce you to the children and communities you have helped Kiwanis International Foundation makes a positive impact on children’s lives in so many ways. Today I’ve come to do two things: first, to offer a huge thank you for your support. The foundation truly appreciates your generosity. They’re not the only ones. So I’d like to introduce you to some of the children you and your club have served through your gifts to the foundation.

5 TODAY Grants for Kiwanis-family service projects in local communities throughout the world Grants to support Kiwanis youth programs Scholarship programs for young members of the Kiwanis family Gifts from individuals help children at risk, underserved youth, those who need help. Kiwanis contributions fund: grants, scholarships and Kiwanis leadership programs.

6 Emergency and Disaster Relief Grants
Wherever and whenever children and families are in need, Kiwanians are there to help. Kiwanis-family districts, clubs and members are quick to respond when disaster strikes—because every second counts. The foundation provides emergency and disaster-relief grants to support the efforts of Kiwanis-family districts and clubs that respond to disasters in their communities. Foundation grants make an immediate difference by harnessing the power of Kiwanis service to feed, clothe and shelter children and families who are affected by tragic events.

7 Thailand An unusually severe and prolonged monsoon season resulted in Thailand’s worst flooding in more than 50 years. The city of Nakhon Sawan was totally submerged during the flood.

8 Kiwanis clubs in neighboring Malaysia, supported by a disaster relief grant from the international foundation came together to provide relief to Wattalow School, in Nakhon sawan.

9 Through this combined effort, food, new computers, class room desks and chairs and building materials are ready to go!

10 These young children are waiting to enter their new classroom, thanks to the disaster relief grant from Kiwanis International Foundation.

11 Club Grants Gifts to Kiwanis International Foundation may end up back in your own club or in a club halfway around the globe.  Grants from the foundation help Kiwanis clubs and districts fund projects and initiatives for which they wouldn’t have resources otherwise. Kiwanis clubs, divisions and districts that take on projects which need extra funding can apply to the foundation for club grants. Twice a year the foundation’s Board of Trustees spends hours poring over grant requests from all over the world to extend your Kiwanis impact.

12 Supper Club The Kiwanis Club of Westfield, Massachusetts, supports the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield through a club grant from the international foundation. This grant funds the Supper Club, where local children receive free, balanced nutritious dinners on a daily basis after school.

13 Hands-on learning about nutritious food choices
Many programs are offered to improve children’s knowledge of smart food and healthy lifestyle choices. Providing youth nourishing meals with the Supper Club reinforces the healthy lifestyles they are learning about in nutrition and fitness programs.

14 Children are connecting the lessons they learn through the healthy habits programs and applying them to their behaviors at dinner time. There has been a huge increase in the number of children choosing to eat their fruits and vegetables instead of avoiding them as witnessed in the past.

15 Kiwanis Book Bank Program
Our last example of a club grant is the Kiwanis Book Bank Program. Since 2004, the Philippine South District has distributed over 200,000 books to over 3,000 child daycare centers, kindergarten, elementary and secondary schools.

16 In addition to the joy these books bring to the school children, teachers also gain free access to valuable books and school reference materials.

17 Through this grant, local Kiwanians are able to share in the social and economic impact created by providing books to youth. A book in hand influences not only their hearts and minds but also their hopes and dreams for a better world.

18 TOMORROW A five-year initiative to raise US$110 million to prevent more than 100 million mothers and newborns from the suffering and death caused by maternal and neonatal tetanus. The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus, our Global Campaign for Children, will save or protect millions of mothers and newborns.

19 Maternal and neonatal tetanus
Kills nearly 60,000 newborns and a significant number of mothers every year. Kills one baby every nine minutes. Targets the poorest, most underserved women and children on Earth. Tetanus is a spore that is found in the soil everywhere. In poorer communities, where women lack healthcare, women and babies are infected by tetanus when the umbilical cord is cut after childbirth as a result of unsanitary conditions and unsterile instruments. Once they are infected, a lethal toxin attacks his or her nervous system causing excruciating spasms and convulsions.  A baby will become highly sensitive to light, sound, and touch, so even the mother can’t sooth her own child. Neonatal tetanus ills almost 60,000 newborn children every year: in addition, a significant amount of women die due to maternal tetanus. Maternal and neonatal tetanus, or MNT, is known as a “Silent Killer” that affects the most marginalized and underserved populations and areas.

20 Newborns and mothers are dying but there is a solution
Prevented by a series of three vaccine doses costing US$1.80. Once vaccinated, mothers will have immunity through child bearing years. Immunity is passed on to babies.

21 Reaching the hardest to reach
Trained health workers go door-to-door delivering vaccines and other health services.

22 Elimination progress to date
Twenty-four countries have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus. Sustainability- None of the 24 countries have gone back on the list. Thirty-five countries are still threatened by maternal and neonatal tetanus.

23 Fundraising progress to date
More than US$9 million has been raised to date. Nearly 1,000 Kiwanis members have committed to four years of volunteer service. More than 2,000 clubs have already contributed.

24 Planned gifts create your Kiwanis legacy
FOREVER Planned gifts create your Kiwanis legacy Building lasting relationships with donors through our commitment to stewardship Bequests Gifts of Life Insurance Life Income Gifts Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets Life Estate Gifts Your estate doesn’t have to be large to make a positive impact on children’s lives—even beyond your own. A planned gift to Kiwanis International Foundation ensures that your values provide a positive influence…forever. Planned gifts can allow you to make a larger gift than you otherwise could, let you receive income for life, earn a higher investment yield, or reduce your capital gains or estate taxes (depending on the giving plan).

25 Planned Giving Societies
Heritage Society Individuals who have included the Kiwanis International Foundation in their estate plan Mary and Bo Shafer Legacy Society Recognizing planned gifts of US$50,000 or more Planned gifts allow you to match your philanthropic values with those of Kiwanis International in a deeply meaningful and rewarding way. With the Heritage Society and the Mary and Bo Shafer Legacy Society, Kiwanis International Foundation offers you the opportunity to make your generosity a part of your legacy.

26 Alice Savage Heritage Society Member
Life has taken Alice Savage in several interesting directions. As a doctor, she has specialized in infectious diseases and cared for patients at the U.S. Veterans Administration. As a volunteer, she has served children around the world. As a donor, Alice's generosity has been equally diverse. "I have a passion for a number of things," she says. "And philanthropy really comes from passion." Working with Kiwanis in various capacities has also taught Alice about why people give—and helped confirm her own motivations. For Alice—a member of the foundation's Heritage Society, Founders Circle and more—gifts of time and financial resources result from the passion and perspective that were instilled in her as a child. "My family was always concerned with serving people in need," she says. "I learned to think about other people, and to support things that were important to me." To this day, the lessons of her youth help Alice focus on the real-world reasons she gives and encourages others to give. "In terms of meaning or generosity, someone giving $5 can be equal to the gift of someone who has more money," she says. "What matters, ultimately, is the number of children we're helping."
