NCTM is the public voice of mathematics education, supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for each and every student through vision, leadership, professional development, and research.

The NCTM president chairs the Board of Directors. The president serves a 2-year term. The Board always includes either the past president or president-elect, and the headquarters executive director. The Board is composed of representation of teachers at different levels (e.g., elementary classroom teachers and university faculty). The Board always includes a member from Canada. Board members serve 3-year terms. Four Board members are elected each year. All NCTM members may vote for Board members. Each NCTM committee includes a Board liaison who reports to the Board on committee work and represents the Board’s points of view to the committee.

NCTM Board and staff work: Engaged in our own professional learning on issues surrounding access, equity, and empowerment. Book study devoted to The Impact of Identity in K-8 Mathematics. Professional development with the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity on micromessaging.

10 Access, Equity and Empowerment
NCTM has re-framed Access and Equity to include Empowerment, to capture the critical constructs of identity, agency, and social justice. The Board modified its mission statement and strategic priorities to reflect this reframing of NCTM’s scope to include more than just access and equity.

28 Advocacy and Outreach NCTM comments with guidance on implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Comments on proposed regulations on accountability, state plans, and state and local report cards in ESSA STEM Ambassadors program with NSTA NCTM on STEM Education Coalition Board 2017 NCTM Legislative Platform STEM Education Coalition NCTM is an active member and on the Board of the STEM Education Coalition, which consists of more than 200 education, business, and other organizations with an interest in STEM policies. NCTM Executive Director Ken Krehbiel is on the Board of the coalition. With NSTA and funding from the National Science Foundation, NCTM is co-sponsoring a program to develop Ambassadors for STEM education. The kickoff meeting will be in July. NCTM Legislative Platform Each year the Board passes the Legislative Platform, which states NCTM’s positions on important policy issues under consideration or likely to be discussed in Congress or policy circles. It is the clearest single statement of NCTM legislative and policy priorities. 28 28 28
