Standards-Based Education Curriculum Alignment Project Elementary Principals’ Meeting October 21, 2010

Outcomes To understand the timelines and reasons for adoption of the new Colorado Academic Standards To realize the importance and need of implementing Standards-Based Education To understand the timelines and changes to the new Colorado Assessment System To understand the SVVSD plan to aide teachers and provide support in the adoption of the new Colorado State Academic Standards

Develop and implement with fidelity and accountability a guaranteed and viable curriculum that is standards-based. Increase student achievement by focusing on what students need to know, understand, and be able to do at each grade level and how it is measured. Empower teachers with research-based instructional strategies and resources.

Why?

#1 Way to Raise Student Achievement Develop and implement with fidelity and accountability a guaranteed and viable curriculum that is standards-based. ~Robert Marzano –A curriculum is guaranteed if it gives clear guidance to teachers regarding the content (standards and grade level expectations, evidence outcomes and 21st century concepts, and skills) to be addressed in specific courses or at specific grade levels.

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum A guaranteed curriculum ensures all students receive an effective education based on adopted curriculum standards and grade level expectations regardless of who is teaching the class. A curriculum is viable when there is sufficient time, materials, and instructional tools for teachers to teach the curriculum so students learn that content and perform at a proficient level.

What’s happening at the state level… The Colorado State Board of Education adopted the new Colorado Academic Standards in December 2009. Districts are required by statute to adopt standards that meet or exceed the new academic standards by December 2011. Colorado’s new standards will be modified with national (not federal) Common Core standards in English/language arts and mathematics. Revisions are due in December.

What’s happening at the state level… What We Know For Sure – Assessment

August 2011 Implementation of new Colorado Academic Standards Implementation of the curricular resources to support classroom teachers developed by Standards-Based Leadership Committees of teachers –Unit Templates –Curriculum Maps –Year at a Glance Professional Development to Support Teachers: –Professional Development Classes –Online Classes and Webinars –Standards-Based Leadership Teams St. Vrain Valley School District Timeline

Strategic Plan Student Achievement Fully Implemented K-12 Standards-based Instructional Model Objective:  To put in place a fully-articulated and well understood standards- based instructional system that includes up-to-date standards, student assessments, data-driven decision-making about instructional planning, and a useful reporting system.

Top 5 Priorities Identified During the CADI Roll Out 1.Develop and Implement a systemic organization which clearly identifies the structures and processes for our work. Hold us accountable for RESULTS. 2.Synthesize a viable Standards-Based curriculum. Develop accountability procedures for every teacher, principal, administrator and instructional classified staff member, which are frequent, documented, and assessed by STUDENT RESULTS. 3.Provide Professional Development that brings clarity to staff; provides follow-up to monitor and support staff growth in skill implementation, and which is assessed for effectiveness by STUDENT RESULTS. 4.Assure that building administrators and instructional staff become highly skilled in use of data to adjust their practices. Evaluate success by STUDENT RESULTS. 5.Embed collaboration across the district as our critical tool for doing business, and renewing our cycles of forward motion.

Highest Priority Choose the priority that you feel is the highest priority for our district and go to that designated area. As a group, make a case for why this should be the highest priority. Have one person share out with the whole group.

Standards-Based Project to Date 8/08 - Action Plan Developed in collaboration with SVVEA Leadership 9/08-6/09 - Review of Standards-Based Research and preparation for Standards-Based committee work 6/09 – Standards-Based Committee Workshop (teachers, principals, and SVVEA Leadership) Determine SVVSD Standards-Based Education Philosophy and Vision including support that is essential for teachers Develop Templates for Standards-Based Work 9/09 - Develop Committee Applications and Selection Process 10/09 - Select separate committees for reading, writing, math and different levels (primary, intermediate, middle, high) 12/09 - State Standards Revised and Released

Standards-Based Project to Date -continued 1/10 – Standards-Based Education Alignment Project Began with Language Arts and Math 1/0-6/10 – Language Arts and Math committees created the following documents: –Year at a Glance –Unit Templates –Curriculum Maps –Common Course Descriptions 9/10 – Year 1 Project begins with Science and Social Studies Year 2 Language Arts and Math –Alignment with Common Core –Exemplars –Unit Rubrics –Proficiency Plans are being developed and implemented for rollout in other content areas.

Standards-Based Practice In its simplest terms, a standards-based teaching/learning cycle continually answers four critical questions: What do students need to know, understand, and be able to do? How do we know that students have learned? How do we teach effectively to ensure students learn? What do we do when students don’t learn or do reach mastery before expectation? Aligned with PLC and RtI models

Standards-Based Philosophy and Practices Jigsaw Break into four groups Each group is responsible to read one of the practices starting on page six of your handout and then create a presentation to report out to the rest of the group.

What Will Be Different? District-Wide Common: Grade Level Expectations Curriculum Frameworks Pacing and Expectations Evidence Outcomes Proficiency indicators Rubrics Exemplars Assessments Accountability PD for instructional strategies

The “what” is being defined by CDE…Colorado Academic Standards SVVSD and with the invaluable help of curriculum committees comprised of classroom teachers is developing the necessary curricular documents and support for this standards adoption. This includes: –Unit Templates –Curriculum Maps –Year at a Glance The “how” is defined by teachers in their daily instruction. “Together we can make a difference for twenty-seven thousand students!”
