8 Burke Mission Statement
The Burke Museum is dedicated to creating a better understanding of the world and our place in it. The museum is responsible for Washington State collections of natural history and cultural heritage, and for sharing the knowledge that makes them meaningful. The Burke welcomes a broad and diverse audience and provides a community gathering place that nurtures life-long learning and encourages respect, responsibility, and reflection.

“The purpose of the corporation and the activities and business to be carried on shall be to discover, procure, collect, and preserve and make available to its members and to the general public whatever relates to any department of the history of New Jersey, natural, civil, literary, political, military, social, educational, and ecclesiastical, and generally of other portions of the United States, and to disseminate knowledge concerning the same, and thereby to advance the education and the moral and mental improvement of men, women and children without pecuniary profit and solely for the benefit of the public.”

To collect and preserve artifacts, objects, publications, photographs and other documentary materials related to New Jersey’s state, local, ethnic and family history from earliest settlement to the present To disseminate information about New Jersey history through exhibits, educational programs and publications based on the Society’s collections To maintain a research library of past and current literature on New Jersey history

18 The 1988 Vision Statement The vision of the NJHS is to tell the story of New Jersey by creating a state-of-the-art museum and research center that: Provides easy, safe and inviting public access Provides collections with the highest standards of professional care and preservation Enables the Society to produce relevant interpretive exhibits and programs based on the collections Enables the Society to provide every 5/6th grade school child with history educational products and/or programs that support the state curriculum and are based on the collections
