Criteria Based Assessment (CBA) GLOBAL SETUP

8 SIMN History continued…
Setting up CBA SIMN History continued… 1. Turn on CBA from Learning Areas Configuration menu 2. Tick Enable Criteria Based Assessment (by default class teachers cannot maintain criteria

9 Menu Items will now appear in top Learning Area menu and in the subject side menu

10 Criteria Interval Ratings
Intervals are predefined times in which judgements can be made. This could be term based descriptions, week based or anything that school may choose. It could even be as simple as a collection period.

11 Create Criteria Interval Ratings
To create an interval across the whole school click on the “Add Interval” button and enter the description. In our example we will use term based interval descriptions. It could have been easily Week 6, Week 15 etc. We will create a Term 1, Term 2, Term 3 and Term 4 set of intervals. We could also add Term 1 VET, Term 2 VET etc. When a criteria is added not all intervals are required.

12 Add Ratings Scale To Add a rating scale click on the “Add Scale” button and enter a description Now edit the scale to enter the Rating Scale values.

13 Edit Ratings Scale To Add a rating scale click on the “Add Rating” button and enter a description

14 Understanding the Ratings Scale
Users will create a set of ratings for ongoing assessments that belong to each task that is created in the learning areas. Another set is created for the interval judgement calls.

Criteria Based Assessment (CBA) SUBJECT SETUP

17 Adding Formal Criteria
Users with specific access (Domain Coordinators, class teachers if specified), will be able to add Formal Criteria at a subject level. These criteria could be the related education standards for your relevant system. This for example could be VET/VCAL competencies, Australian Curriculum standards etc. When you add a Formal Criteria you will be asked to enter the following; Optional: Could be used if curriculum has codes Criteria Description as listed in documentation (Standard, Outcome, Competency Choose Rating Scale from the library of rating scales the school has created Choose the relevant intervals that will be required for when a judgement call is to be made.

18 Formal Criteria Example
In this example we have added three Formal Criteria that are very generic. Optional: Could be used for information purposes

Setting up Formal Criteria in a Task

21 Using Formal Criteria in Task Creation
To utilise Formal Criteria a user needs to click on the Enable Criteria box. When this is done new tabs will appear.

22 Important Formal Criteria considerations
By default when you add Formal Criteria the task is a numeric task and a maximum value needs to be set. Users can choose to add Formal Criteria and select to no have an overall grade. Students and parents will only receive information about the formal criteria. When these are all completed the task will report as “Complete” to the users. All the other usual options for the task will need to be configured.

23 Criteria Tab – Add the Criteria
Select the Formal Criteria and click the assign button. Note: the Rubric Criteria at the bottom of this screenshot will be discussed when demonstrating rubrics.

24 Criteria Tab – Click save to finish
When all Formal Criteria are added, click the save button Note: The task can be edited up until a student submission is completed

25 Marking Formal Criteria
Click the “Mark” button as usual to begin marking tasks that have been submitted. We will look at individual student marking We will look at Quick entry

26 Marking Formal Criteria - Student
Click the student “Mark” button

27 Marking Formal Criteria – Quick Entry
Click the student “Quick Entry Button” button Note: As this task has been configured to not have an overall grade, only the Formal Criteria need to be completed. Users can use the fill down to completed the results. Previous entered data does not get changed by the fill down action.

28 A Formal Criteria Task no overall grade - Completed
The student task will be reported as completed where a task has no overall grade after all Formal Criteria have been marked.

Formal Criteria Judgements

31 Formal Criteria Judgements
Opportunity for a teacher to make a judgement call on Formal Criteria during any part of the year. These can also be made available in reporting to help in the final determination of the final criteria score. The reporting system will be linked to a specific interval.

32 Special Reporting Component
Linked to a Rating Interval Note: Schools may never use the reporting integration for all subjects

33 Report Entry Linked to a Rating Interval to provide ongoing feedback

34 Generated Report Linked to a Rating Interval to provide ongoing feedback Can have more than 1 formal criteria report component on a report as long as the ratings intervals as unique. New options in SIMON allow this to be hidden in report generation

Rubrics in SIMON “In education terminology, rubric means "a scoring guide used to evaluate the quality of students' constructed responses". Rubrics usually contain evaluative criteria, quality definitions for those criteria at particular levels of achievement, and a scoring strategy. They are often presented in table format and can be used by teachers when marking, and by students when planning their work”. Wikipedia

37 Creating a Rubric in SIMON
Create a task Enable Criteria for the task Can add Formal Criteria as well as Rubric Criteria SIMON Rubrics reads from left to right in terms criteria score ratings Default Value is 5. This sets the number of columns (Scores) for the rubric

38 Creating a Rubric in SIMON
Add Rubric Criteria by clicking on the “Add Criteria” button Enter criteria description and click ”Save” Continue Process until all Rubric Criteria have been added

Document Management System (DMS)

48 The SIMON DMS Anyone who has used the course builder, domain or global resources, or knowledge Banks has interacted with the SIMON DMS Modules are built on the DMS Modules built on the DMS often automatically attaches Metadata Metadata describes other data. It provides information about a certain item's content. For example, an image may include metadata that describes how large the picture is, the colour depth, the image resolution, when the image was created, and other data. A text document's metadata may contain information about how long the document is, who the author is, when the document was written, and a short summary of the document. Web pages often include metadata in the form of meta tags. Description and keywords meta tags are commonly used to describe the Web page's content. Most search engines use this data when adding pages to their search index. Techterms Website This is how you can search for documents in SIMON.
