PASSIVE SENTENCES We use the passive voice to make the action in a sentence more important than the person who does the action. The action is more important We don’t know who did it Lots of people did it We don’t want to say who did it For example: In a restaurant Customers eat dinner Dinner is eaten Waiters serve food Food is served People drink wine Wine is drunk The waiter pours wine Wine is poured EAT – IS EATEN SERVE– IS SERVED DRIN– IS DRUNK POURS– IS POURED

When we use an ACTIVE verb, we say what the subject does:
PASSIVE SENTENCES When we use an ACTIVE verb, we say what the subject does: My grandfather was a builder. He built his house in 1945 I work in a big company. It employs two hundred people When we use a PASSIVE verb, we say what happens to the subject: This house is quite old. It was built in 1935 Two hundred people are employed in this company When we use the PASSIVE , who or what causes the action is often unknown or unimportant: A lot of money was stolen in the robbery ( somebody stole it, but we don’t know who) Is this room cleaned everyday? ( does somebody clean it? – it’s not important who) If we want to say who does or what causes the action, we use by ... This house was built by my grandfather Two hundred people are employed by the company BE (Is/are/am/was/were/will be/won’t be/would be/can be...)+PAST PARTICIPLE (cleaned/bought/seen/eaten...)
