12 EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Challenges cited Many teachers said that though trained, they had no specialized skills in teaching reading in both ECD and Std 1. Children in rural areas use mother tongue and lack exposure to Kiswahili and English as these are second and third languages. There is teacher understaffing in many schools and schools have over-enrolled classes as a result of introduction of UPE. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF

13 EGR in Malindi, Kenya 6-Nov-18 Challenges cited In Kenya, there are no oral/reading examinations in languages. This affects the emphasis in the area (usually one lesson per week). Inadequate teaching and learning materials. Lack of storage facilities for materials developed as some classrooms are not lockable. 6-Nov-18 EGR in Malindi, Kenya By EMACK-AKF
