1 Anarchy Definition – lawlessness, disorder, or no government
Advantages: people can do anything they want Disadvantages: no rule or order; no one held responsible for their actions Example: none (it usually doesn’t last very long)

2 Direct Democracy Definition: ALL citizens must meet to make decisions
Advantages: everyone has some power Disadvantages: it is not possible today because countries have large populations all 300 million Americans could not get together and decide every issue Example: Mayflower Compact

3 Representative Democracy/Republic
Definition –citizens vote and choose a smaller group of people to represent them, make laws, and govern Advantages: the government is limited and the people have power Disadvantages: the decision-making process can be slow because of compromises Example: the United States

4 Monarchy Definition– a government with a ruler based on family or heritage (a king or queen) An absolute monarchy has unlimited authority (like a totalitarian state) Advantages: decisions are quick; symbol of country Disadvantages: you must be born into this position Example: Saudi Arabia

5 Constitutional Monarchy
Definition – monarch that acts as the head of state, but still has a law-making body that is voted on by the people Advantages: people make some decisions; still have a symbol of state Disadvantage: same as Republic Example: Great Britain

6 Theocracy Definition – government under control of religious leaders
Advantages: can enforce morality Disadvantages: no room for religious diversity or disagreement Example: Iran

7 Aristocracy/Oligarchy
Definition – government in control by a small number of people Aristocracy is land-holding elite Oligarchy is usually in control by force Advantages: decision-making is faster with a small number of people Disadvantages: most citizens have no control Example: Myanmar

8 Totalitarianism/Dictatorship
Definition: an authoritarian government where the government controls everything. People have limited freedoms and choices. Advantages: decision making is fast Disadvantages: the people have no power Example: North Korea

9 Class Work – p10-12 Create a Foldable outlining the Principles of American Democracy. Fold in half (hot dog style) & then in thirds Top left corner, title: “Principles of Democracy” Concepts to include: Rule of Law, Limited Government, Consent of the Governed, Individual Rights, Representative Government. In each box you must: Describe the principle in your own words Give an example of the principle (see me if you need help) Illustrate the principle of government You must have ALL of these things to get full credit. Please turn it in when you are finished.

11 Democratic Principles
Rule of Law: everyone (including leaders) have to follow the laws Limited Government: Government of the people, by the people, and for the people Consent of the Governed: Voters have choices; political parties; Majority rule: citizens will abide by what most people want and will respect the majority’s decision (Jean-Jacques Rousseau) Individual Rights: Respect for minority rights Representative Government: Fair, free elections of leaders. “one person, one vote”
