2008 The state & city partnered, funded, and planned a major redo of Aurora. The project was cancelled; funds were spent elsewhere. 2015 The city advertised an upgrade to Aurora as part of the Move Seattle levy - the upgrade disappeared. 2018 The state will repave Aurora this summer. The state had asked the city if they wanted to partner to do more. The city said no.

UNSAFE Aurora is the only north-south connection for ¾ miles between Meridian Ave. & Fremont Ave. Choices to walk or bike: use Aurora’s west side or its east side?

NEGLECT Aurora is a repellent gash through what should be the heart of the Aurora Licton Springs Residential Urban Village Neglect forces people away from what should be a vibrant main street and breeds deterioration and crime

7 NEGLECT Aurora Seattle’s repeated neglect of civic investment is an abdication of fundamental city planning and a failure of transportation and safety planning. It is a denial of a major part of the Seattle 2035 growth strategy, equity, and the comprehensive plan

COMPARE Compare what Shoreline did to Aurora. They proceeded with the improvements planned in 2008 Compare to Lake City Way, which carries more traffic than Aurora. It was improved with many of the funds that had been planned for Aurora

It will take a coordinated investment by citizens and the City and State requiring: City Planning & Design Guidelines Economic Development Planning Transportation & Road Planning

Parts of Greenwood Ave. were repaved in 2016 No new pedestrian safety was added SDOT can rectify their failure, but it will cost more than doing it right the first time

13 Citizen Action Helps CORRECTION
Citizen groups protested SDOT’s omission of pedestrian facilities in their 2016 Greenwood repaving Groups are seizing the reigns by independently doing some of the things that the city should have done. The next section to get repaved (planned for ) includes pedestrian facilities

14 Citizen Action Helps WIN
In Licton Springs community groups spearheaded by Greenways groups and ALUV received 3 grants totaling $1.4 million for a pedestrian signal at Aurora & 92nd, other safety improvements, & artwork along Aurora ~5 years ago citizen groups began a concerted effort at the state, regional, and city levels for a pedestrian & bike bridge across I-5 at Northgate. It will open by 2021.
