1 English II Quarter II Book Report

2 TEN SESSIONS Students will be awarded ten points for each session. Sessions will occur or be checked as homework assignments on the following dates during the quarter. November 17th Th. November 29thTues. & November 30thWed. December 6thTues. & December 7th Wed. December 13th Tues. & 14thWed. January 4thTues. 5thWed. & 6thTh.

3 Absences? Unexpected Events?
If you are absent on any of these dates, you must bring book to class the day you return to school. If homework assignment was given before your absence, it is due upon return. Assignments will be on my website. If possible, stay on target to meet deadlines. If unforeseen events take over a scheduled day, the session will be rescheduled.

4 Requirements -In order to receive points for each session, you must…
…have current book IN CLASS (not locker…not home) with you on the scheduled days. …read the book independently as a homework assignment. … successfully complete tasks assigned in class or at home related to your book. …work on the assignments and keep them together as a progressive journal.

5 Assignment #1 Part One Write the answers to the following questions and write the answers in the format below. Be sure to use proper punctuation. 1.Who is the author? (last name/first/middle) 2. What is the book’s title? 3. Where was it published? 4. What is the name of the publisher? 5. What is the publication date? Anderson, Laurie Halse. Speak. New York: Penguin Group, Print.

6 Part Two 1. What is the genre of this book? 2. Why did you choose this book? 3. What is the setting? Do you think it’s important to the story line? 4.What is the major problem in this book so far, or what do you think it’s going to be? 5.Find a sentence that contains a prepositional phrase. Write the sentence. 6. Fill in this sentence _____ (main character’s name) wanted___but ___so____.

7 Assignment #2 With your current book complete the following –
On the same sheet of paper, head the assignment with book title, author and date. Answer the following questions.

8 1. From which point of view is this book told?
2. Which of the five key levels of conflict (man vs. man/himself/society/ nature/supernatural) are present in your book so far. Which seems to be the main one? Explain. 3.Give an example of cause and effect in your book. 4. Find two sentences with prepositional phrases. Write the sentences; underline the phrases. 5. Find an example of a simile and a use of imagery.

9 Assignment #3 People are motivated by many things. For example some people will do anything for money, some for friendship, some for love etc. What is it that motivates the main character in your book? Explain why you think this. Pick two of the following elements. Find one example of each: foreshadowing/ flashback climax/hyperbole/ personification 3. Write one sentence containing a prepositional phrase. Underline the phrase. Find two new words. Define them based on context. 5. What real-life topic might be researched related to this book?

10 Assignment #4 Complete a characterization chart on the principal character or individual in your book. For homework, write a complete paragraph which begins with a topic sentence that makes a general statement about this character. Example: Ponyboy, the protagonist in the book The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton, struggles between identifying with a group and accepting people as individuals.
