The constant velocity is also known as CV joints which are used to transfer the power to the wheels from the transmission.

Here the power is transmitted at a consistent speed of rotation and not affected by rotating angled joints exist between the driveshaft and wheels.

Generally, you will find the CV joints virtually in all front wheel drive cars. But most of the new rear wheel drive cars have a separate rear suspension.

Fixed and plunge joints

The plunge joint is the inboard joints and the fixed joint is an outboard joint. These types of joint are placed within the front-wheel- drive applications.

Generally, the fixed plunge joints will do most of the works because it can tolerate the bigger operating angles for steering the wheel.

Thus, the rear wheel drive applications have an independent rear suspension, so each axle shaft has one plunge joint.

Tripod and ball-type plunge joints

The tripod plunge joints are contained three trunnions that have needle bearings with spherical rollers.

The most CV joints are Rzeppa gets its name by the name of an engineer H.Rzeppa who invented this joint.

It contains six spherical balls on its joints for reducing its operating angles by 50% and its teeth do not transmit the torque across the joint.

These spherical balls are secured in their locations by taking the help of small windows inside of a cage assembly.

The way the Rzeppa CV joints works is similar to a bevel gear. Instead in the outer and inner housing, it can move forward against each of their tracks.

Tripod CV joints

All the interior end of the drive shafts has a tripod joint that allows transmitting the power regardless of whether there is angle shifting.

In general, the tripod CV joints can be included with a three-legged spider with mounted on the barrel like rollers.

These rollers go into the cup with the three matching grooves and all are connected to a differentially.

These barrel like rollers contain the mount that has the ability to slide forward and backward on its tracks within the tulip.

Fixed tripod joints

The front wheel drive cars use a fixed tripod joint as an outer joint that outer housing has the trunnion mounted onto it.

Thus, the input shaft of the fixed tripod joints has an open tulip in which three different rollers bearings will turn against.

However, these joints are held together by a steel spider that locks them in its proper places.
