1 The Invasive Species Compendium
Old World Climbing Fern Lygodium microphyllum This presentation is about a GLOBAL PROJECT to build the Invasive Species Compendium. It is being jointly led by CABI and the US Department of Agriculture, with the support of a Development Consortium. The Invasive Species Compendium CABI: Philip D. Roberts

2 US National Invasive Species Management Plan Action Item 53
History CABI has a suite of encyclopaedic databases called Compendia Crop Protection (CPC) Aquaculture (AC) 2. Forestry (FC) Animal Health & Production (AHPC) US National Invasive Species Management Plan Action Item 53 “The National Invasive Species Council, led by USDA, will produce an Invasive Species Compendium... The Compendium will include a broad array of searchable information relevant to the biology, distribution, and management of invasive species The project will be undertaken in close cooperation with CABI.” Why the joint leadership by CABI and the US Department of Agriculture? In 1999, President Bill Clinton signed an Executive Order, designed to reduce the impact of invasive species on the US. This resulted in a National Plan, prepared by the National Invasive Species Council (NISC). The Plan included an Action Item (number 53) saying that a Compendium in invasive species should be produced, with CABI. CABI readily agreed to this partnership (with USDA), on condition that the three low-lighted words be deleted – to which USDA readily agreed.

3 Scope Global coverage All natural and managed ecosystems
All taxa - including animal and plant pathogen (excludes human pathogens) Focus on species with highest invasiveness and impact, current coverage c. 35% plants c. 30% pests and pathogens of crops and environment c. 15% pests and pathogens of animals c. 15% aquatic animals c. 5% terrestrial vertebrates

4 Scope c1500 of detailed invasive species datasheets
Numerous additional datasheets covering: hosts, countries, habitats etc. Text prepared by species expert and peer-reviewed by two scientists. Taxonomic tree Distribution maps (download to Google Earth and CSV) Bibliographic database (c65,000 growing weekly) Full text papers (c750 growing weekly) Image database Glossary of terms Links to picture libraries and identification keys

5 Example ISC Datasheet

6 Elements of a species datasheet
Identity Names, scientific and vernacular; notes on taxonomy Geographic distribution History of introduction and spread; phytosanitary risk Biology and ecology Habitat; genetics; reproduction; physiology; nutrition; associations; environmental requirements (climate tolerance, soil tolerance, water tolerance); dispersal (pathways, trade, vectors); natural enemies Impact Economic; social; environmental; threatened species Summary of invasiveness Management Prevention; control (cultural, mechanical, biological, chemical, genetic, utilization); eradication; containment; surveillance; ecosystem restoration Gaps in knowledge / Research needs References Illustrations / Map Datasheets have this standard template – for every species.

12 Purpose / users of ISC Who will / does use it?
Researchers / Lecturers and students / Resource and environment managers in agriculture, forestry, rangeland, urban land, rivers, lakes and coastal waters / Policy makers, agricultural research centres and Extension officers / Quarantine officers / Crop protection and animal health practitioners (both public and private sector) / Weed specialists. It is designed to help a wide variety of users to: Make soundly based decisions in invasive species management Provide a science-based, authoritative resource for quarantine measures Save time, by providing instant access to vital information Prepare lecture notes, reports, presentations and public information resources Compile maps, graphs and tables Teach/train/study Support research Advise others Provide a resource in policy making Provide data for risk assessments Support market research and marketing

13 Funding Business Model: Existing Funders
Development of the ISC = $3m for platform development and content (~€2.2m) Funded by a Consortium of member organisations (Government dept. / NGOs / Private companies) Currently in closed Beta available to all funders/partners Open access: free to users (Launch May) Funding for sustainability and enhancement secured until 2016 = 5 years funding Future Enhancements already planned More detailed species datasheets / New threatened species datasheets / Enhanced thematic mapping Existing Funders Australia, Group Membership [Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity (CRCNPB), The Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC), Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL), Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IACRC)] Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) / Canadian Forest Service (CFS) / Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)  India, Ministry of Agriculture Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) Mexico, National Health, Safety and Quality Service for Agri-Food (SENASICA)  Monsanto  Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation  UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) / UK Department for International Development (DFID) partner with CABI and Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) United States Agency for International Development (USAID) / United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) / United States Department of Agriculture - Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) / United States Department of Agriculture - Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS) / United States Department of Agriculture - Forest Service (USDA-FS) / United States Department of Agriculture - Invasive Species Co-ordination Program / United States Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) / United States Department of Agriculture - Rural Development (USDA-RD) / United States Department of Commerce - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service (NOAA) / United States Department of Interior - Fish and Wildlife Service Secretariat of the Pacific Community Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation Syngenta Crop Protection  Blue = European countries

14 Quality Control Species experts commissioned to write datasheets
Two scientific peer reviewers Internal editor reviews and enters data Data is supplemented/updated as to timetable (same review process followed) Search Metadata checks for indexing (e.g. country/taxonomic positions etc.) Re-index Advanced search yearly Site search (Google like) re-indexed every 3 days

15 Added value for EU project
Links Plantwise – open access knowledge bank and crop clinic network USDA & US-FWS – the ISC is to contain all outputs, including all details of “invasives causing extinction/biodiversity loss to listed and candidate species”. Global Env. Fund - the ISC is used in training African and Caribbean zones Content partners – EPPO / ISSG / OIE Added value for EU project Global species coverage (Early warning of species spread in trading countries) Weekly Bibliographic database update Platform works on mobile devices (iPad and iPhone) CABI Intergovernmental organization / Global funding links Sustainability funding secured for current budget of 5 years Could combine data from relevant compendia
