1 The Future of Light Since the dawn of time, mankind has wanted Artificial Light Today, we live, work and play under electric light – mostly bulbs and tubes But the LED Lights are coming

2 The Earth at Night In a typical home, 1/5th of electricity is used for light Lighting uses lots of electricity We waste a lot of light Source: Freedonia Group, Inc. CONFIDENTIAL © 2007 Luminus Devices, Inc. All rights reserved.

3 LED Light bulbs – efficient but…
One of the better LED bulbs today Equivalent to 60W incandescent bulb, but uses only 12 W Cost is about $40 Philips L-Prize Submission Why does it look so unusual???

4 How do you make a White LED?
Blue LED + Yellowish Phosphor Note – we have lots of white LEDs. Each student should have one and they should be able to see the yellow phosphor in the cup.

5 Can we do more with Lighting?

6 Smart Lighting Vision Synthesizing Light for the Benefit of Humanity
Lighting Beyond the Bulb Better Health Huge Energy Savings Data from Light (no RF)

7 New Materials and Methods
Smart Lighting New Semiconductors New Materials and Methods Systems Level Thinking Creative Problem Solving Needs wide variety of skills Growth area – ties to Energy and Sustainability Flexibility for Artistic Expression Ties to Health, Architecture, Art, and Healthy Living Disruptive Technology – New Markets and Opportunities Global Interest, Global Investment, Huge Opportunities Chemistry and Physics you can SEE Lighting and Design with ties to Art, Physiology, Agriculture and Entertainment

8 Engineering Design Process
Collect relevant basic knowledge from math, physics, chemistry, etc. Develop an ideal model and use the model to predict system behavior (paper and pencil analysis) Apply simulation tools to predict system behavior based on the ideal model incorporating the characteristics of real components. Build and test a prototype system (e.g. experiment with an actual circuit) Develop a practical model and establish its limits of applicability

9 Many Ways to Show This Process
From Mechatronics Probably too Complex Other Ideas: Check out the video From Oklahoma State (very good)

10 Simplified Cycle Diagram
Math & Science Info Ideal Model Simulation Experiment Practical Model

11 Apply to Science Fair Projects?
Hydropower versus wind power Soil fertility and conductivity

12 The Method is Not so Simple
The process does not follow the simple cycle There is info shared with every step There also has to be an output Math & Science Info System Model Simulation Experiment More on this later
