Please have your copy of the guide available to view.

3 Panther Night January 22, 2018 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Century High School Auditorium/Cafeteria Open House format Presentations at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm Academic Staff available to answer questions Sports, Clubs and Activities tables Panther Night is a great opportunity for you and your parents/guardians to view the building, have questions answered about course selection, and meet with students and staff regarding activities, athletics and clubs. The format for Panther Night is open house. Your family can come and go as they choose. In the course of about an hour, you can hear an overview presentation of the registration process and what Century has to offer, get questions answered, and complete your course registration. The presentation will be roughly 35 minutes and will be repeated at 7:00 pm. There is no need to attend both sessions.

4 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS (p. 5)
Courses Credits Required English English 9 (1.0 credits) American Lit (1.0) World Literature (1.0) English 4 (0.5) Speech (0.5) Math (through Algebra 2) 3.0 Science Biology (1.0) Chemistry (1.0) Physics (1.0) Social Studies World History (1.0) American History (1.0) Human Geography (0.5) Government (0.5) In order to graduate from Rochester Public Schools, students need to earn 24.0 credits. Credits are awarded upon successful completion of high school classes. Each semester class is worth 0.5 credits. Students should earn 6 credits each year of school to total 24.0. 15.5 credits must be earned in specific areas or required classes. The remaining 8.5 credits can be earned in Elective courses of your choosing. The next two slides will detail the required classes. Students taking Intermediate Algebra and/or Geometry in Middle School will have those credits added to their High School records and will begin high school math at the next level. All students must successfully complete an Algebra 2 class in order to graduate.

7 Consideration: Your Interests
Review your MCIS Jr. profile Choose classes that align with what you like to do CTECH classes (p. 12/13) provide opportunity to explore careers MCIS comment. CTECH stands for Career and Technical Education Center at Heinz. CTECH Pathways are designed to provide you with opportunities to explore classes in some technical careers. Most CTECH classes are part of a series of classes. Entry level CTECH courses are usually offered at Century High School. Courses further down a pathway are offered only at CTECH. These courses are scheduled into your high school day and the district will provide transportation to and from the CTECH building.

RPS Graduation Requirements fulfill most college admission requirements Community Colleges & Technical Schools do not have additional requirements Most State Colleges/Universities require 2 or more years of World Language Selective Colleges/Universities require 3-4 years of World Language, 4 years of Math and Science, and AP and Honors level courses Page 11 shows you requirements for a few colleges and universities. Each Institution has it’s own unique set of requirements. Your guidance counselor will help you navigate the college admissions process as you go through high school. Note: World Language is not a high school graduation requirement of Rochester Public Schools, but can be helpful to gain entry into some colleges and universities. Scholarships and grants may also be dependent upon completion of some level of World Language instruction.

Academic Measures play an important role in the admission process Grade Point Average Class Rank Strength of Schedule/Rigor ACT/SAT Scores Grade Point Average or GPA is a score given by converting your semester letter grades into a number system and finding the average. Rigor refers to the number of challenging classes successfully completed. ACT & SAT are standardized college admission test that most students take in their Junior year of high school.

Teachers available – lunch, prep, duty Study hall Library Testing Center Math, Science, and Humanities Resource Success Lab ZAP program From time to time all students need some help with their school work. Century has many ways to provide students with assistance. Teachers are very willing to help with your work. They have availability before and after school as well as during the day. The Century Library is open and available with resources from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. Students can make up missed tests and quizzes in the Testing Center located in the Library. Teachers are scheduled to assist students in the three resource areas daily. Students who want or need more targeted help with school work can be scheduled into the Success Lab for individualized help. ZAP stands for Zeros Aren’t Permitted. Students who do not complete homework assignments will be assigned to ZAP to complete them during their lunch or study hall.

Select at least 6 classes for each semester Important – If you want 5 classes, a music elective & a study hall, write study hall on line 6 & check a music choice on line 7. 7th choices other than music will be awarded on a space available basis The core subject areas of Math, Science, English, and Social Studies are year long courses. If selecting a year-long elective, fill in a box in each semester.

27 Alternates Please fill in four alternative classes in the order of your preference The alternate choices will be used in the event your first choice for an elective in lines 5 and 6 are unavailable It is not a bad idea to have a second choice for your language

Welcome to the RPS online course registration guide tutorial. Today we will take you through the How To’s of using the online guide. This is an online course catalog. You will not be doing any kind of electronic course registration through this site.

Scroll down the main page. You will see “Course Registration on the right.” Click on that.

This is the new online course catalog. We will go through a few of the features. Graduation requirements are on the right showing all required classes needed to graduate. General Information provides additional information about courses, course sequence, PSEO, and more. FAQ’s provides answers.

31 Most courses are taught at all three high schools, but a select few courses are only available at certain buildings. Click on the high school below to find out which courses are available in your school. Courses offered at CTECH are available to all three high schools and will be listed under all three schools. Let’s click on the Century icon…..

32 This page shows all of the courses listed by department.
Over on the left you can choose to filter your course search by grade, or course type, or for courses located at CTECH. Let’s select English.

33 As you scroll through you will see each course has information below the course name noting the number of credits, whether or not it fulfills one of the graduation requirements, the minimum grade you can be to take the class, and the length of the course. If you click on “Course Sequence” you will see which courses must be taken before others can be taken. If you click on “Course Detail” you are provided additional information about the course including if it requires a prerequisite class or has an honors option.

Bring registration forms and guides to Century Panther Night on January 22 beginning at 6:00 pm Century Staff will help you complete the form at Panther Night Or return it to your school counselor by January 25 if you or your parents/guardians are unable to attend Panther Night
