For more information visit our website: New Reading Series Starting this school year, all elementary schools in QAC will be using the McGraw-Hill Wonders reading series. SES had several teachers who piloted Wonders last school year. These teachers were a part of the textbook selection committee who recommended this reading series. We are very excited about this new series. Students will remain in their classrooms for the reading and language arts timeframe, and each teacher will provide small group instruction for three small groups. Teachers will be assessing your child’s fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness, phonics skills, vocabulary skills, as well as, spelling and writing skills. Teachers are provided many resources with this new reading series. Additionally, students will have opportunities to utilize online activities for practice.

October 2015 Math Matters Helping your children in math Many parents have asked for ways that they can help their children with math. They feel that math instruction has changed- and it has! But- some things never change in math. The FACTS!!!! The facts are a tool that children need to have mastered securely to be successful in math. Each grade has a set of facts that they should learn fluently. Grade Required Fluency K Add and subtract within five 1 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. 2 Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. Add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 3 Multiply and divide within 100. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. Add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers Parents can help by working with their children to learn the basic facts. Start with just a few facts, until your child KNOWS them quickly and accurately. Then add a few more, mixed in with the ones they know. This technique makes children more successful and confident. Continue adding facts until your child knows a large set of facts. Make games with facts- using playing cards, number cubes, and rhymes. Look online for computer games that practice facts, such as Thought for the month: Statistics show that those who celebrate more birthdays live longer! Smile and be happy! Until next time..:)

October 2015 “Fall into Reading” It’s the perfect time to fall into Reading! The fall offers amazing autumnal changes to spark conversation with your child. Let them jump in the fall leaves, pick ripe pumpkins, and taste crisp apples. All of these experiences help to build your child’s background knowledge and language. You can turn a day trip into an “I spy game.” For example, “I spy something that is red, ripe and in a tree. What is it?” You can also discuss how the pumpkin grows from a seed to a ripe pumpkin. Around a campfire, tell family stories or make up your own. You start with some story starters, such as “One cool fall day I…,” or “I was walking down the road, when I suddenly saw a….” Story telling not only promotes language development but also family time. The season of fall can be the backdrop for developing your child’s phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness includes a child’s ability to find rhyming words, create their own rhyme and identify letter sounds. For younger children you can use songs or nursery rhymes to make practice fun. For instance you can rewrite familiar songs or nursery rhymes to describe the fall. Older students may enjoy writing their own poems or songs about the changing season. Bingo is a popular game for all ages. You can create your own bingo boards that include fall words or high frequency words. Make bingo better by letting your child use creepy spider rings or ghostly goblins as their bingo chips. To encourage reading outside of school, let your child choose books that interest them. You may want to focus on the life cycle of pumpkins or apples. You could select books that discuss what animals do in the fall. Your child may enjoy reading spooky stories or poems. For younger children let them wear a plastic finger, while they are tracking print. It is a creepy, but cool way to encourage voice to print matching. Lastly, you could let your child read by flashlight or your cell phone. It might set the mood for some fall reading fun! The use of I-Pads and laptops can spark some fall reading too. Our new reading series, McGraw Hill Wonders, also features many on-line tools that you can access from home, including e-books, games and lesson. Your child’s teacher will be sending home user name and password information soon! Rebecca Van Aken Reading Specialist at SES

Please call Elizabeth Miller, Coordinator of the Judy Center Partnership at (410) or by to learn how to enroll your child. Sudlersville Elementary School (SES) Sibling Survey-We recently sent out the SES Sibling Survey as part of our continued effort to identify all children (birth – 5) residing in the Sudlersville area. We are fortunate to have the assistance of Kendall Savage, a Salisbury University of Maryland Social Work Intern this year. She will be working on many projects to benefit the school, and community. Some of her duties will assist us in reaching more future students, and families in the Sudlersville area. Thank you in advance for completing the survey. New Partner-St. Andrew’s Chapel Preschool has joined the Judy Center Partnership as a new partner this year. The Judy Center’s mission is to identify children residing in the Sudlersville Elementary School area as soon as possible (hopefully at birth) in order to help parents prepare their children for school success from the very beginning.
