Define the term development? When a country is improving for the people living there. Improving their quality of life.

2 How many of the development measures can you name?
Crack the code what does the blue and red show? Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Wealth) Gross National Product (GNP) (Wealth) GNI per head (Wealth) Birth rate (Women’s rights) Death rate (Health) Infant mortality (Health) People per doctor (Health) Literacy rate (Education) Access to safe water (Health) Life expectancy (Health) Human Development Index (HDI) (a mixture) How did you do? Red means as a country develops it gets lower, blue gets higher. They take an average Disclaimer: These measures of development are misleading because…

3 It shows global inequality. The MEDCs are generally found in the North
It shows global inequality. The MEDCs are generally found in the North. LEDCs are generally found in the South. BUT it doesn’t tell you which are developing the quickest, or not at all. What does this map show? Using the map name a country which is LEDC and a country that is MEDC

4 WHICH IS BETTER... Quality of life Standard of living
(includes SoL but also other things that can’t be measured) Standard of living (material wealth e.g. income)

5 They both think they have a good standard of living…how is that possible?

6 Causes of Global inequality
SEE (SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, EVIRONMENTAL) In pairs, without using revision guides take in turns to name a cause of global inequality. QUICK Q: Using one of the causes you have named, explain why a country is more likely to be less developed with it? (3 marks) BONUS: GIVE A REAL LIFE EXAMPLE!

7 Picture this… You live in a poor country who is going to “Self-help” how are you going to do this? Write down some ideas and we will see if you improve your quality of life or fail miserably. Move to urban areas for jobs, food, health Improve their environment e.g. their house Work as a community to build and run services

Now recite it back to your partner. What did they miss out? Can your partner remember more?

9 Trading Groups or Trade blocs
What are they? Groups of countries that make agreements to reduce barriers to trade. An example? NAFTA, EU

10 Quick Q: Give two ways a poor country’s debt can be reduced?

11 WHICH IS BETTER... Bilateral aid
(Aid given directly to the recipient) Bonus question: Why would you bother giving aid? Multilateral aid (Indirectly through an international organisation that then distributes the aid)
