2 Rome’s Geography

3 The Founding of Rome According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus & Remus in 753 BC. Romulus kills his brother Remus and names Rome after himself.

4 One historian wrote… “Not without good reason did gods & men choose this spot as the site of a city!”

5 Dominating the Ancient World
Rome eventually became one of the greatest civilizations of the Ancient world. They conquered many areas in which we learned about already. Greece Egypt Asia

6 Rivers of Rome There are several rivers that flow out of Italy’s mountains. Rome started as a small town on the Tiber River. Its central location & good climate were important factors in it’s success & growth. There were few harbors for trade. So many times they traded with each other.

7 Italy Italy, where Rome was built, is a peninsula in Southern Europe.
It looks like a high-heeled boot sticking out into the Mediterranean Sea. Ready to kick the nearby island of Sicily

8 Mountainous Land There are two major Mountain Ranges in Italy.
To the North there are the Alps. Europe's highest mountain range. The Apennines runs the length of the peninsula. This made it hard to travel from one side to the other. But the mountains are less rugged than Greece.

9 Volcanic Also, some of the mountains are volcanic like Mt. Vesuvius.
These eruptions could destroy Roman towns.

15 Why would people build towns and cities on hills?
Hills of Rome Since the Apennines mountains run through the peninsula much of Italy is not flat. Where there are not mountains there are hills. Rome was built on 2 hills. Why would people build towns and cities on hills?

16 Hills of Rome Rome like other Ancient cities sat atop hills.
Romulus founded Rome on top of Palatine Hill Strategic location, Hills and River Seven Hills: Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, Aventine, Palatine and Capitoline Hills

18 Rome’s Climate Rome has warm, dry summers & mild rainy winters.
Its climate allows for them to grow a variety of crops. Citrus Fruits Grapes Olives This food supply lead to Rome’s success.
