4 Duties vs. Responsibilities
Duty - something you are required to do; usually has a penalty for failure to comply Responsibility - a voluntary action; can be beneficial to the country but not required to perform

5 Citizenship: Duties (5)
1) Obeying the Law Laws are meant to... keep you and others safe protect your rights settle disagreements It’s up to YOU to know the laws that affect your life Example: fishing

6 Citizenship: Duties 2) Defending the Nation
The US has a volunteer army Selective Service ALL males must register Only in the case of a national emergency would you be called to serve (drafted) What if I don’t? up to $250k and/or 5 yrs in prison ineligible for Federal Student Loans, jobs, job training or security clearance

7 Citizenship: Duties 3) Serving on a Jury
6th Amendment: right to an impartial jury where the crime was committed Failure to appear Georgia man got 3 days in jail Massachusetts fines up to $2k Arizona issues a bench warrant

8 Citizenship: Duties 4) Paying Taxes Congress’ authority
Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution 16th Amendment ...to provide for the common defence and general welfare… Failure to pay taxes: fines, interest, confiscation of assets, jail

9 Citizenship: Duties 5) Attending School Arizona: until 16 years old
Why? be prepared to support themselves be prepared to contribute to society perpetuate our system of governing

The Common Good The Golden Rule the basic responsibility of every citizen is to contribute to the well-being of all members of society There are 5 ways to contribute to the common good and uphold the “office of citizen”...

1) Serving the Community How do you make your community a better place to live? respect others opinions welcome a new student food kitchen build a house pick up trash

2) Influence Government work with a group to educate and influence our elected officials No minimum age Remember: YOU are their constituent; They work for YOU!

3) Election Campaigns If you find a candidate you believe in, work to get them elected make phone calls hand out flyers blog encourage people to vote

4) Voting the most fundamental principle of self- government Variety of public issues school boards changing taxes state and national elections Be educated on the issues fact versus opinion
