1 Introduction to Career Cruising For Libraries GUHSD 2010-11

2 What is Career Cruising?  Replaces COIN3 Assessments available as with COIN3 College, Career, and Job Search resources for research projects available as with COIN3 Greater emphasis will be placed by Counseling Department on tracking individual progress via “My Portfolio”  To be used by Counseling Department for: Post Secondary Plan (PSP) - c urriculum and documentation Course planning - to assist in building master schedule

3 How do people get to Career Cruising?  METHOD #1: Go to http://www.careercruising.comhttp://www.careercruising.com Logging in at this link logs you in to a generic account People can take assessments, but cannot save results Research resources may be accessed, but not “bookmarked” Good for parent access and for general research purposes

5 How do people get to Career Cruising?  METHOD #2: Use links from the District site District site links direct students to the “Portfolio Login” page Using the “Portfolio Login” logs you into an individual account Students can save assessment results, “bookmarked” resources, and much more (course planner, resume, journal entries, messages…) Students should always use the “Portfolio Login”

6 Individual “Portfolio” Login Credentials  Username = CC-[Student ID] Example: CC-123456  Password = eBackpack password New students will be added periodically. If a student needs to be added “on the spot,” contact a site guidance counselor for assistance. If a teacher wants to test out the “My Portfolio” features, demo account credentials may be requested from a site guidance counselor. If a teacher wants to access more advanced features such as building classes of students, contact a site guidance counselor to discuss options.

7 How do people get to Career Cruising?  METHOD #3: Use links from the VLLC Links are located on the “Online Databases” page and the “College and Career Resources” page The main link directs students to the individual “Portfolio Login” page There is also an “OPTION” link that connects to the generic login page

8 How often will Career Cruising be used in the library?  The answer will vary for each school depending on: Location and availability of computers on campus Existence/staffing/availability of Career Center Partnerships between site Counseling department and subject area teachers Interest of subject area teachers in college, career, and job searching projects outside of Post Secondary Plan curriculum

9 How exactly will Career Cruising be used in the library?  Possible scenarios include the following: Counselors and/or teachers working with the Counseling department may sign up to use computers in the library for leading students through Career Cruising activities Individual students may come through on passes to make up Career Cruising assignments You may use Career Cruising as a resource to assist classes or individual students with college, career, and job searching research

10 What should I know about Career Cruising?  At a minimum, you can support students completing guidance curriculum by knowing: How to log in General awareness of “My Portfolio”  As a librarian, you will also find that Career Cruising serves as a valuable research resource in general and not just for the Counseling department Let’s get started with some basics!

11 What is the main key to navigation?  The top menu buttons (purple) are always there! Great Spanish translation option

12 Careers  Perform a keyword search (text box)  Browse: Search by Index – Alphabetical browse Search by School Subject – Examples: English, Math, Science California Industry Sectors – CTE “Strands/Pathways” Connection 16 Career Clusters – Also includes cluster profiles Military Careers – Search by Career, Job Family, Service Branch  Use Career Selector to narrow down careers by criteria selected More criteria selected “boxes checked” = a shorter list Save results to “My Portfolio”

27 Schools  Compare Schools: Select two schools to compare  School Selector: Works just like the “Career Selector”  Planning Timeline: Informational overview of the process of getting into college with “to dos” by grade level  Financial Aid: Use a “Financial Aid Selector,” “Search for Scholarships,” and learn about “Federal Financial Aid”

28 School Profile: Compare Schools  Select Compare Schools from the main “Schools” menu, or…  When viewing any school profile, click on Compare School

29 Assessments  Assessments are activities that will be part of the PSP  The Learning Styles Inventory is a standalone assessment (it doesn’t link students to careers or schools)  Students may take assessments multiple times and save multiple results to “My Portfolio”  EXCEPTION: The Ability Profiler should only be taken once and only when proctored

30 Assessments: Career Matchmaker & My Skills “Career Matchmaker” results mesh with “My Skills” results “Career Matchmaker” can be taken in three question clusters customized based on initial responses Narrow matches by “Type of Education” Review answers to view and/or change responses
