1 Characteristics of life
By conrad, jonathan Characteristics of life

2 What do all living things have in common?
• Responds to the environment • Growth and change • Ability to reproduce • Have a metabolism and breathe • Maintain homeostasis • Made of cells • Pass traits onto offspring

3 responsiveness to the environment
In order to survive, all living things must respond and adapt to their environment.

4 Examples of responding to the environment
Maggots respond to light (their stimulus) by moving away from it so they can keep hidden from predators. When the sun’s too bright, you pupils get smaller.

5 RHYTHMIC BEHAVIOR Rhythmical Behavior is the specific behavior of an organism in a recurring manner. This is when the animals respond regularly to their environment. Examples: Swallows migrate south for the winter, this is an example of an annual type of rhythm behavior.

6 Growth and change Everything that is a living thing, grows and develops. For example, when you were born you weren't able to talk, walk, etc… As we grow, we develop ways to communicate, walk and reproduce.

7 Ability to reproduce In order to maintain a stable and ongoing life, all living things must reproduce. watch?v=tFZeyFbBLXE

8 reproduction Reproduction is when living things find a mate and reproduce offspring. Cells can divide themselves without a mate to create identical offspring. This process is called Parthenogenesis

9 Parthenogenesis Parthenogenesis is a form of Asexual reproduction, and the offspring develops with unfertilized eggs. For example, some female species can create offspring without the help of a mate. The species that go through Parthenogenesis are snakes, lizards etc

10 Animals that are involved with Parthenogenesis

11 metabolism and breatHING
Metabolism: the accumulated total of all the biochemical reactions occurring in a cell or organism

12 Examples of metabolism
Complex molecules are broken down to produce energy. Energy is then used to build up complex molecules.

13 Maintaining Homeostasis
Homeostasis is a process that maintains internal stability within an organism, such as blood glucose, around a particular level. Control of Body Temperature: When you are naked, you are still able to maintain a normal body temperature between 37° C and 38° C. If the external temperature varies between 16° C and 54° C, you are still capable of keeping a normal body temperature. Metabolic cells cause Cellular Reaction which soon results in heat and warmth.

14 CELLS A cell is the building block of all organisms. It is the smallest unit of life. Anything that is living is made of cells. This is a Animal Cell cs/cells/

15 PASSING TRAITS ONTO OFFSPRING
Trait- A distinctive quality or characteristic. Offspring- Its a child or what you produce. When parents pass genes down the line to you, it becomes heredity. The characteristics that are being inherited can be predicted before birth has taken place.
