Bio-technology is technology based on biology.
Biotechnology is the natural use of plants, animals and micro-organisms (microbes) such as bacteria, as well as biological processes – to help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Everyday biotechnology touches our lives.
By harnessing nature’s enormous biological capabilities, we can produce substances or choose appropriate microbes that help in the production of food, fuel, medicine, increase manufacturing efficiency and clean up the environment
Biotechnology uses microbes to digest contaminants. Microbes are enzyme factories providing a continuous supply of complete enzyme systems. Enzymes act as “knives and forks” for microbes. Unlike enzyme-only systems, bacterial systems produce different enzymes based on the specific predominant compound.
Enzymes liquify waste; they will not digest it. All an enzyme product accomplishes is to change the form of waste. There are enzyme products without microbes; however, without microbes, there is no biotechnology process

6. Bioremediation is a combination of two words – bio, short for biological, and remediation, which means to remedy. Simply, bioremediation uses living organisms to clean up contaminated soil or water. Despite its broad definition, bioremediation usually refers specifically to the use of microorganisms.
In the technical sense, bioremediation is the understanding, monitoring and controlling the environment for remediation with biological processes. Although the word bioremediation was first coined in 1987, prehistoric fermentation was the earliest form of bioremediation by removing sugar to form alcohol. In the centuries that followed, compost sites and bioreactors were developed leading all the way up to the more modern waste water treatment plants of the 1900’s.
Types of Bioremediation The main types of bioremediation are as follows:
• Intrinsic Bioremediation — Also known as natural attenuation, this type of bioremediation occurs naturally in contaminated soil or water.
• Biostimulation — Nutrients and oxygen – in a liquid or gas form – are added to contaminated water or soil to encourage the growth and activity of bacteria already existing in the soil or water.
• Bioaugmentation — Microorganisms that can clean up a particular contaminant are added to the contaminated soil or water. Bioaugmentation is more commonly and successfully used on contaminants removed from the original site (ex situ) and less successful when applied at the site (in situ) of the contamination
